Job OverviewThe Ultrasound Department is recruiting a Senior Ultrasound Imaging Care Assistant (ICA) (Band 3) to support the ICA team and deputise for the Ultrasound ICA Team Leader. The role involves supervising and coordinating ICAs to optimise patient throughput, maintain departmental standards, and ensure efficient delivery of the 1,000 weekly scans across Derriford Hospital and other sites.

- Salary: £24,071 – £25,674 per annum

- Working Pattern: Full‑time with possible weekend and bank holiday duties; flexible working accommodated where service needs allow.
- Support the ICA team, deputise for the Team Leader, and assist with line management, recruiting, and staff meetings.
- Provide patient assistance through the scan process, including guidance on dressing, undressing, and manual handling where required.
- Organise rota management across all ultrasound rooms, balancing service demand with team capability and managing sickness or absence.
- Mentor new ICA staff during induction, ensuring competency records are current and safety standards are maintained.
- Act as an inpatient coordinator when necessary, assessing clinical urgency and coordinating with ward teams via the portering system.
- Maintain cleanliness, stock levels, and safety of scan rooms at all times.
- Explain imaging procedures to patients of all ages and report concerns to a Radiographer.
- Provide emotional support to anxious, frightened, or terminally ill patients and their relatives.
- Lead daily huddle meetings and contribute to Imaging Production Board sessions.
- Assist with ordering stock items related to the ICA team.
- Demonstrable experience of working with the public in a customer service or caring role.
- Computer proficiency and ability to handle patients and equipment safely in line with Trust manual‑handling procedures.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to prioritise workload effectively.
- Minimum education:
GCSE (or equivalent) in English and maths. - NVQ Level 3 in Health & Social Care or equivalent, or demonstrable experience equivalent to the qualification.
- Preferred: recent healthcare experience, knowledge of a patient administration system, ECDL qualification, clinical observation skills, or a care certificate.
