Main duties of the job
Working within the NMC Code of Professional Conduct/HPC Professional Guidelines, be responsible for one's own professional conduct and monitor those aspects within the theatre team.
Deputise on a rotational basis for the nominated cluster Team Leader.
Actively influence the overall efficiency and development of the theatre service in collaboration with the Senior Team Leader, Clinical Services Manager and Theatre Operational team.
Identify and develop clinical changes to working practice and work in different ways to enhance service provision.
Provide daily leadership and clinical support for the designated recovery, maintaining 85% clinical and 15% managerial duties, including managing the theatre suite out of hours.
Collaborate with the Division Matron on improvement initiatives, with the Senior Team Leader on procurement of supplies and equipment, and with the Theatre Central Stores team on stock management initiatives.
Job responsibilities- Plan day‑to‑day workload, including off duty, stores and stock control, and manage resources effectively while meeting budgetary constraints.
- Commit to evidence‑based practice and clinical excellence to improve patient‑centred care and service delivery.
- Undertake research and lead the audit process.
- Participate in risk management and Clinical Governance issues, reporting any untoward incidents to the Cluster Team Leader.
- Maintain accurate staff annual leave and sickness records.
- Conduct annual staff appraisals and develop personal development plans for Band 5 and Band 3 staff within the area of responsibility.
- Provide a supportive working environment for staff, identifying opportunities for development and education.
- Assist as a panel member in recruitment and selection.
- Update and facilitate induction programmes for new staff members.
- Support the theatre cluster team leader in ensuring staffing establishments and skill mix are appropriate for clinical demands.
- Take responsibility for clinical standards, ensuring procedures and protocols are followed.
- Maintain personal and professional development to meet the changing demands of the service.
- Maintain a safe environment, fostering high patient and staff morale through leadership and personal example.
- Act as a mentor/facilitator for the team, offering advice, guidance and support as appropriate.
- Provide a flexible approach to duty rosters and undertake any duties required to fulfil service needs.
- Be available for on‑call duties, weekends, night duty and late shifts on a rostered basis, ensuring the 24‑hour emergency service is maintained.
- Recent demonstrable experience in a specialist area within a similar role.
- Credible clinical expertise in the relevant area of practice.
- Competence in managing recovery areas.
- Proven managerial, leadership and facilitation skills.
- Evidence of recent CPD.
- Awareness of human resources issues.
- RN/ODP.
- Registered with NMC/HPC.
- Completed a recognised management programme or demonstrable experience.
- Degree or equivalent demonstrable experience;
Trainer/Assessor, Theatre educator or relevant educational course.
- Organisational skills.
- Methodical approach.
- Effective influencing skills with senior health care professionals.
- Ability to assess and analyse situations quickly and act appropriately.
- Enthusiasm for introducing and facilitating change.
- Assist with the development of the specialist practitioner service.
- Demonstrate efficient use of resources.

- Ability to manoeuvre patients and equipment.
- Accuracy, dexterity and good hand/eye coordination.
- Participation in the on‑call rota and flexible working conditions under negotiation.
