Ward Manager – University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust

Job Summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Ward Manager to lead the nursing team on Birch Day Case unit at Plymouth Hospital NHS Trust. Birch is a Haematology Day Case Unit open Monday–Friday 08:30–19:00. The role involves treating patients with various haematological disorders and providing clinical nurse management, leadership and expertise in all aspects of service delivery.

Main Duties
  • Provide clinical nurse management, clinical leadership and expertise in all aspects of service delivery within the sphere of responsibility.
  • Continue to provide leadership and guidance in working towards an amalgamated service both in the short and long term.
  • Ensure high standards are developed, implemented, evaluated and maintained in accordance with Clinical Governance frameworks.
  • Lead by example, acting as a role model, deploying and supervising all nursing staff effectively.
  • Act as an expert resource on nursing care of patients within the specialities and hold a key role in the multi‑disciplinary team.
Job Responsibilities
  • Delivery of high standards of clinical care.
  • Delivery of infection control practice as defined by national recommendations and local policies; teach staff to understand their responsibilities.
  • Ensure staff understand and implement actions and responsibilities (environmental cleanliness, maintenance and use of all equipment within clinical setting).
  • Lead the investigation and follow‑up of all clinical incidents and complaints, ensuring corrective action is implemented.
  • Act as a role model for excellence, maintaining own clinical competence and active NMC registration.
  • Provide specialist nursing advice to the multidisciplinary team.
  • Deliver a high standard of nursing care, initiating and co‑ordinating assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of individual patients’ needs based on ward philosophy, and liaising across the organisations to ensure continuity of care to community settings.
  • Identify and interpret complex patient needs in relation to disease and proposed treatment.
  • Report and document all relevant nursing/patient needs, communicating changes with other healthcare professionals in the multidisciplinary team, both verbally and in writing.
  • Provide health information, education and promotion, advising patients, families, and others respecting privacy and dignity.
Person Specification

Knowledge and Experience – Essential

  • Previous recent demonstrable experience in a leadership capacity at Band 6 or above.
  • Recent clinical skills and knowledge.

Knowledge and Experience – Desirable

  • Knowledge and demonstrable experience of Haematology/Transplant.

Qualifications – Essential

  • Proven Registered Nurse (NMC).
  • SACT trained.

Qualifications – Desirable

  • Post‑qualification Haematology Course.

Aptitude and Abilities – Essential

  • Good organisational and communication skills, written and verbal, with ability to demonstrate fluency, clarity and effectiveness at all levels.
  • Effective influencing skills: in general and with senior healthcare professionals.

Aptitude and Abilities – Desirable

  • Previous demonstrable experience of managing and controlling a budget.
