The Marine Biological Association in Plymouth is looking to appoint two Postdoctoral Research Assistant/Scientists for the new Microplastics and Marine Pollution group funded by the UKRI project
* Microplastics and multistressor effects on marine ecosystems in the context of global change* (MICROMIX). The positions are led by Dr. Alice Horton.

About the Role

Post‑holders will undertake experimental design and execution, sample processing and analysis, data analysis, and preparation of peer‑reviewed scientific manuscripts. They will also engage with the wider scientific community, presenting findings at workshops and conferences.

Qualifications

Must hold a PhD in ecotoxicology, invertebrate biology, microbiology, environmental science, chemistry or a related field.

Must demonstrate proficiency across at least two of the following areas:

  • Working with live macroinvertebrate/zooplankton organisms
  • Experimental ecotoxicology testing (e.g., microplastics, organic chemicals, metals)
  • Spectroscopy and analysis of spectroscopic data (µFTIR, Raman)
  • Molecular analysis (PCR, DNA/RNA sequencing, metabarcoding)
  • Modelling approaches in risk assessment, ecology or ecotoxicology (ERA, SSD, DEBtox, trait‑based)
  • Intermediate to advanced statistics using R
  • Experience working in a laboratory environment
  • Enthusiasm for writing research publications
  • Motivation to conduct high‑standard scientific research
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Strong communication skills in a collaborative research environment
  • Excellent English language skills

Desirable experience (but not essential):

  • Working with microplastics (experimental/analytical)
  • Lab method development or adaptation
  • Novel microscopy/spectroscopy/analytical chemistry techniques
  • Presenting at national or international conferences
  • Public engagement and outreach
