PhD Studentship in Development of Pancreatic Tumour Treating Field System

General Description:
The University of Plymouth is offering a postgraduate research studentship focused on the development of a pancreatic tumour treating field (TTF) system. This innovative project aims to advance non‑invasive cancer treatment technologies by exploring the application of alternating electric fields to inhibit tumour growth, specifically targeting pancreatic cancer.

The research will involve the design, development, and optimisation of a TTF system, integrating expertise from biomedical engineering, electronics, and cancer biology. The successful candidate will work within a multidisciplinary research environment, collaborating with academic researchers and potentially clinical partners to translate laboratory findings into practical therapeutic solutions.

Key responsibilities include conducting experimental and computational research, developing device prototypes, performing modelling and simulation of electric field interactions with biological tissues, and evaluating system performance. The candidate will also contribute to data analysis, preparation of academic publications, and dissemination of findings through conferences and research outputs.

The project provides access to advanced laboratory facilities and offers an opportunity to contribute to impactful research addressing a critical global health challenge.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • A first‑class or upper second‑class honours degree (or equivalent) in Biomedical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Physics, or a closely related discipline
  • A master’s degree in a relevant field is desirable but not essential
  • Strong interest in medical device development, bioengineering, or cancer research
  • Ability to undertake independent and interdisciplinary research
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • International applicants must meet the University’s English language requirements

Required Expertise/

Skills:

  • Knowledge of biomedical engineering principles and electronic system design
  • Understanding of electromagnetics and interaction of electric fields with biological tissues
  • Experience with modelling and simulation tools (desirable)
  • Experimental and laboratory skills
  • Data analysis and problem‑solving abilities
  • Scientific writing and communication skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively across disciplines

Salary Details:
