Job DescriptionThe WPC Collections System Operator is an entry-level position to maintain Water Pollution Control collection systems. It includes maintenance and repair of pumps, lift stations, sewer lines, valves and related operating equipment and collection systems.
The job requires a Wastewater Collection Operator Level I License or the ability to obtain the License within a specified period.
The job requires knowledge of or the ability to learn the maintenance of sanitary sewage collection equipment and systems, maintenance of pumps, and using specialized equipment to inspect and clean sanitary sewer lines. It requires the ability to maintain a collaborative and cooperative working relationship with elected and appointed officials, other City employees, other organizations, and the general public.
The work environment includes a public building that may include exposure to hazardous chemicals, sewage treatment equipment, and noisy and/or loud equipment. It includes working outdoors in adverse weather conditions and hazards involving the use of power tools and equipment which subjects the employee to mechanical and electrical hazards, moving vehicles, heavy equipment, and traffic hazards. The job requires operating vehicles, including a truck and tanker trailer.
The job is an on-call position, responding to emergency situations. Employees designated as immediate response personnel must live thirty (30) minutes or less from their usual daily work site.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Maintains the Water Pollution Control collection system under supervision. Maintenance includes work on pump and lift stations performing maintenance on pumps, sanitary sewer lines, valves, and related operating equipment and collection systems.
- Troubleshoots and cleans lines using specialized equipment including, but not limited to, jet truck, vactor truck, remote cameras, and related equipment. Assists with smoke and dye testing.
- Performs buildings and grounds maintenance around lift and pump stations, manholes, and other collection system areas. Performs traffic flagging duties as needed.
- May direct the work of seasonal/part-time employees.
- Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with City policies, procedures, and safety practices.
- High school diploma or GED; and
- Class I Wastewater Collection Operator certification or the ability to obtain certification within a specified time period required*;
- Class A CDL with tanker-trailer endorsement*;
- Flagger certification;
- CPR certification.
Hiring
Note:
The WPC Collection System Operator position requires a Class A CDL with endorsements within six (6) months of hire and a Class I Wastewater Collection Operator certification within eighteen (18) months of hire. Failure to acquire this certification by the established date will violate the terms of the position and will result in layoff from the position.

Knowledge Of- Methods, techniques, and objectives of maintenance of sanitary sewage collection equipment and related systems including pump and lift stations, collection lines, and access and entry points;
- Methods, techniques, and objectives of maintaining pumps, including plumbing and electrical systems;
- Methods, techniques, and objectives of cleaning and inspecting sanitary sewer lines using specialized equipment including but not limited to, jet trucks, vactor trucks, and remote camera systems;
- Methods, techniques, and objectives of maintaining pump and lift station buildings and grounds;
- Basic building trades including plumbing, carpentry, painting, and related skills;
- Federal regulations and City policies regarding safe work practices relating to use of heavy equipment, power tools, and hand tools;
- State, local, and other applicable building, safety, and health codes and regulations;
- Operation of a personal computer and job-related software applications.
- Operate sanitary sewer specialized maintenance, cleaning, and inspection equipment under supervision;
- Maintain and perform minor repairs on pumps, pump and lift stations, and related systems, including plumbing and electrical;
- Operate hand tools;
- Operate power equipment;
- Operate a motor vehicle, including a semi-truck and trailer;
- Operate a personal computer;
- Read and interpret technical manuals, blueprints, maps, and diagrams;
- Maintain maintenance records, logs, and documentation;
- Work on multiple projects, set priorities, and allocate resources for project completion;
- Maintain a professional demeanor at all times;
- Communicate effectively in the English language at a level necessary for efficient job performance;
