Variable Hour Transit Driver (Blackfoot)
The Part-time Transit Driver operates Transit Department vehicles on a fixed route or schedule, or provides door-to-door transportation by request for eligible patrons. The job requires safe driving skills, exceptional customer service, and the ability to maintain a collaborative working relationship with officials, employees, and the public. The work environment includes a department vehicle and shop with exposure to weather, traffic hazards, and moderate noise.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES- Operate Department vehicles, including buses, vans, and paratransit vans for handicapped passengers, providing timely, reliable, and safe transportation.
- Collect fares and/or check passes or transportation vouchers.
- Conduct pre-trip and post-trip vehicle checks—fuel, fluids, tires, mechanical problems, or damage.
- Assist passengers on and off bus or vehicle, operating wheelchair lifts and securing wheelchairs.
- Answer passenger inquiries, provide fare and route information, and promote a positive passenger experience.
- Maintain route logs, reports, and documentation.
- Perform all duties in accordance with City policies, procedures, and safety practices.
- Perform other duties as assigned by management.
- High school diploma or GED (required).
- Class B CDL with airbrake and passenger endorsements (required).
- One (1) year of large vehicle driving experience (preferred).
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Knowledge of:
- Operation of all vehicles in the Department inventory.
- Transit routes, schedules, fares, and related passenger information.
- ADA and related federal, state, and local statutes affecting transportation.
- OSHA regulations and City policies on safe work practices.
- Traffic and vehicle safety codes.
- Operation of a personal computer and job-related software.
Skill and Ability to:
- Operate Department vehicles safely and reliably.
- Perform safety and damage inspections.
- Assist passengers, including use of wheelchair lifts.
- Operate a personal computer and a two-way radio.
- Read and interpret maps, schedules, technical manuals, and diagrams.
- Maintain route records and documentation.
- Maintain a professional demeanor at all times.
- Communicate effectively in English.
- Complete assignments timely and comply with rules and regulations.
- Perform all duties in accordance with City policies, ensuring personal and public safety.
Frequent standing, walking, sitting, stooping, kneeling, bending, using hands to manipulate tools, keyboards, and operating a vehicle. Occasional lifting or moving up to 50 pounds with assistance. Adequate visual acuity and hearing capacity are required.
