Position DescriptionThe Part‑time Transit Driver operates Transit Department vehicles on fixed routes or schedules, and provides door‑to‑door transportation upon request for eligible patrons. The role requires safe driving skills and exceptional customer service to ensure passengers are served in a timely, reliable, and safe manner.
Key Responsibilities- Operate Department vehicles, providing passengers with timely, reliable, and safe transportation.
- Operate buses, vans, paratransit vans for handicapped passengers, and other vehicles in the Department inventory, depending on assignment.
- Collect fares and/or check passes or transportation vouchers.
- Conduct pre‑trip and post‑trip vehicle checks, including fuel and fluid levels, tires, and mechanical issues or damage.
- Assist passengers on and off bus or vehicle, including operating wheelchair lift and securing wheelchairs.
- Answer questions and inquiries from passengers and provide fare and route information, schedules, transfers, and maps; promote a positive passenger experience and maintain order in the vehicle.
- Maintain route logs, reports, and documentation.
- Perform all duties in accordance with City policies, procedures, and safety practices.
- Perform other duties as assigned. Management reserves the right to assign or reassign duties and responsibilities.
- High school diploma or GED.
- Class B CDL with airbrake and passenger endorsements.
- One (1) year of large vehicle driving experience is preferred.
- Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- Understand operation of all Department vehicles to provide timely, reliable, and safe transportation.
- Know transit routes, schedules, fares, and related passenger information.
- Be familiar with ADA and other applicable federal, state, and local statutes and regulations affecting transportation.
- Understand OSHA regulations and City policies regarding safe work practices for operating public transportation vehicles.
- Know traffic and vehicle safety codes and regulations.
- Operate a personal computer and job‑related software applications.
Skills and Abilities
- Operate vehicles and provide safe transportation.
- Conduct safety and damage inspections and refer problems to mechanics.
- Assist passengers on and off bus or vehicle, including use of wheelchair lift.
- Operate a personal computer and a two‑way radio.
- Read and interpret maps, schedules, technical manuals, and diagrams.
- Maintain route records, logs, and documentation.
- Maintain a professional demeanor at all times.
- Communicate effectively in English at the necessary level.
- Complete assignments in a timely fashion and comply with rules, policies, and regulations.
- Perform duties in accordance with City policies and procedures concerning personal safety.
The employee frequently stands, walks, sits, stoops, kneels, bends, handles materials, manipulates tools, uses a keyboard or types, reaches with hands and arms, and operates a motor vehicle or job‑related equipment. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds with assistance. Sufficient visual acuity and hearing capacity are required to perform the job.
