Pocklington CE Infants is seeking a caring, compassionate and proactive Pastoral Assistant to join our dedicated team. This is a rewarding opportunity to make a real difference to the lives of young children by supporting their emotional wellbeing, promoting positive attendance and behaviour, and working in partnership with families to help every child succeed.

As part of our nurturing school community, you will work closely with teachers, support staff, families and external professionals to provide early intervention and pastoral support, ensuring that every child feels seen, heard and valued. You will play a key role in helping children develop the confidence, resilience and emotional skills they need to thrive both in school and beyond.

Main Purpose

To support pupils' emotional wellbeing, behaviour, attendance and personal development, enabling them to engage successfully in school life and achieve their full potential. The postholder will work closely with staff, parents/carers and external agencies to provide early intervention and pastoral support for children and families.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide pastoral support for pupils experiencing emotional, social or behavioural difficulties.
  • Deliver individual and small-group interventions to support wellbeing, self-esteem, friendship skills, emotional regulation and resilience.
  • Support pupils during unstructured times, including playtimes and lunchtimes, where required.
  • Promote positive behaviour and support staff in implementing the school's behaviour policy.
  • Monitor attendance and punctuality, identifying concerns and supporting families to improve attendance.
  • Maintain accurate records of pastoral support, attendance interventions and safeguarding concerns.
  • Support children through transitions, including entry to school, class changes and transfer to junior school.
  • Liaise with external agencies and professionals to support vulnerable pupils and families.
  • Contribute to the school's inclusive culture and ensure all children feel safe, valued and supported.
Planning
  • Plan, deliver and evaluate pastoral interventions for individual pupils and groups.
  • Contribute to support plans and pastoral provision maps where appropriate.
  • Monitor the impact of interventions and adapt provision based on pupil needs.
  • Support the implementation of attendance action plans and pastoral support plans.
  • Prioritise workload effectively in response to emerging pupil needs.
Working with Staff, Parents/Carers and Relevant Professionals
  • Build positive relationships with parents and carers to support children's wellbeing and attendance.
  • Act as a key point of contact for families requiring pastoral support.
  • Work closely with teachers, SENDCo, DSL and senior leaders to coordinate support.
  • Attend meetings with parents, professionals and external agencies as required.
  • Signpost families to appropriate services and sources of support.
  • Communicate sensitively and professionally, maintaining confidentiality at all times.
Health and Safety
  • Promote the health, safety and wellbeing of pupils at all times.
  • Follow school policies and procedures relating to health and safety.
  • Report concerns, accidents or hazards promptly.
  • Support pupils in managing risk and making safe choices.
  • Participate in relevant training, including first aid where required.
Professional Development
  • Participate in appraisal, supervision and professional development activities.
  • Undertake training relevant to pastoral care, attendance, behaviour, mental health and safeguarding.
  • Keep up to date with current guidance and best practice relating to children's wellbeing and pastoral support.
  • Contribute to whole-school improvement priorities where appropriate.
Other Areas of Responsibility
  • Promote the school's vision, values and ethos.
  • Support the development of positive relationships across the school community.
  • Attend relevant meetings and contribute to school improvement activities.
  • Undertake any other duties commensurate with the grade and responsibilities of the post.
