Work Schedule:

Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.; schedule may vary based on operational needs and may include occasional evenings and weekends in support of orientation and transition programs.

THE DEPARTMENT:

New Student Programs and Family Engagement is responsible for preparing entering students for academic and personal success by providing an effective transition to the university from the point of admission through the end of the students' first year. New Student Programs and Family Engagement provides information, communications, and services to incoming students and their support system to orient them to the traditions, mission, philosophy, and culture of the campus and to make them knowledgeable about Cal Poly Pomona's opportunities, resources, challenges, and programs.

New Student Programs and Family Engagement designs, plans, implements, and assesses mandatory online and in-person orientation events, as well as the ongoing engagement of family members and supporters throughout the academic year. The position will bring together existing decentralized institutional programs, services and activities for parents and families under one functional administrative structure to ensure optimum coordination and resource management, timely response and referral and identification of additional opportunities to enhance parent/family relations and outreach.

New Student Programs and Family Engagement serves as the administrative office for the mandatory student orientation programs, parent/family orientation, and parent/family communication. The office is responsible for compliance with federal, state, CSU System, and University requirements and the timely and accurate dissemination of information to students, parents, families, supporters, and campus constituents. New Student Programs and Family Engagement is housed within the Division of Student Affairs and is part of the Student Experience cluster that reports to the Director of New Student Programs and Family Engagement.

New Student Programs and Family Engagement works collaboratively with campus partners in support of enrollment management goals, student success and retention, equity and belonging, and institutional planning efforts. The Division of Student Affairs strives for excellence through a shared student-centered philosophy and values of collaboration, inclusivity, integrity, innovation, and student-centeredness. In performing the duties assigned to this position, the incumbent is expected to consistently demonstrate attitudes and behaviors that are in keeping with the division's philosophy and values.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Student Leader Development & Program Leadership
  • Coordinate the recruitment, selection, onboarding, and training of approximately 40 Orientation Captains and Orientation Leaders.
  • Recommend student employees for hire and, when necessary, recommend appropriate corrective action or separation in consultation with the Senior Coordinator and Director.
  • Develop and implement training that prepares student leaders to support incoming students and families during orientation and transition programs.
  • Develop student staff work schedules and assign duties based on orientation and program needs.
  • Provide day-to-day work direction, coaching, feedback, and clarification of performance and conduct expectations.
  • Monitor student staff performance and provide input into performance evaluations in accordance with department and university practices. Develop learning opportunities for student leaders in areas such as communication, conflict resolution, peer support, student wellbeing,…
