Landscape Services Mechanic – California State Polytechnic University-Pomona

Type of Appointment:
Full Time, Probationary

Job Classification:

Anticipated Hiring Range: $5,355 – $6,031 per month

Work Schedule:

Monday – Friday, 7:30 am to 4:00 pm

Department:
Facilities Planning and Management (FP&M) leads campus efforts in the planning, development, and maintenance of the campus’s natural and built environments, supporting the university’s mission.

Responsibilities Vehicle/Equipment Preventative Maintenance
  • Perform routine and preventative maintenance—tune‑ups, filter changes, lubrication—on 2‑stroke engine equipment such as blowers, trimmers, and chainsaws.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical failures in 2‑stroke engines and components (carburetors, ignition systems, fuel lines, exhaust).
Vehicle/Equipment Repair
  • Repair and maintain heavy grounds, construction, and road maintenance equipment (gasoline, diesel, or alternative fuel vehicles, tractors, sweepers, skip loaders, etc.).
  • Replace or overhaul components—engines, brake systems, clutches, transmissions, differential assemblies, hydraulic systems, water pumps, valves, piping, tanks, fuel injection systems, and accessories.
  • Install pistons, rings, pins, adjust bearings, clean carburetors, tune air/fuel mixture.
  • Repair ignition systems, track rollers, carriers, and idlers.
  • Replace broken parts such as gas lines, brake lines, hoist cables, steering gears, drive shafts.
  • Repair or install electrical parts, including lights, wiring systems, and accessories.
  • Input and retrieve maintenance data using a data terminal or personal computer.
  • Assemble trailers and mount equipment like compressors, water pumps, or hoists; modify equipment as required.
  • Perform tire and track maintenance on riding mowers and smaller machinery; conduct road tests to ensure functionality.
  • Operate tools and machines—electric drills, grinders, valve facers, drill presses, hydraulic presses, hoists, motor analyzers, dynamo meters, and gauges.
  • Ensure safety features (lights, warning systems, blade guards) are functional on landscape equipment.
Repair Shop Maintenance
  • Maintain a safe, clean, organized work environment.
  • Care for shop tools and equipment; uphold industry standards for automotive, equipment, and heavy machinery maintenance.
  • Perform housekeeping of assigned areas; inspect and document building equipment and systems.
Administration
  • Maintain detailed records of repair work, preventive maintenance schedules, and parts used.
  • Input material and labor hours, technician notes, and estimates into the TMA system promptly.
  • Provide material lists and/or estimated labor hours for specific tasks.
  • Attend training and professional development classes.
Qualifications
  • Knowledge: Thorough knowledge of automotive and/or equipment mechanics, electrical systems, brake and engine overhaul, tools, materials, equipment, and computerized systems; understanding of hydraulic systems; familiarity with state and federal regulations, including smog regulations.
  • Abilities: Skilled repairs on automotive, maintenance, or construction equipment; diagnose mechanical and electrical malfunctions; fabricate parts from blueprints; welding; inspect equipment; estimate cost, time, and materials; maintain records; prepare reports; provide instruction to assistants; respond to emergencies; read/write and perform arithmetic calculations.
  • Abilities typically acquired through progressively responsible training or experience demonstrating journey-level skills similar to an apprenticeship program.
Preferred Qualifications
  • ASE Certified Small equipment repair experience (gas-powered landscape equipment).
