THE DEPARTMENT

Facilities Planning and Management (FP&M) leads the campus efforts in planning, development, and maintenance of the campus ‘natural and built environments in support of the university’s mission. The department seeks to preserve and enhance CPP’s history, aesthetics, physical assets, and natural ecosystems through coordinated planning, design, and construction of buildings, transportation systems, infrastructure, landscaping and other physical improvements. As an advocate on behalf of the university and its auxiliaries, FPM strives to provide facilities that meet scope, budget, operational needs, functional and legal requirements.

FPM is comprised of approximately 160 facilities professionals that also provides Facilities Operations and maintenance services including custodial services, landscaping, recycling, building and mechanical trades, energy and utility management, fleet and auto services. The workforce is culturally diverse and multilingual. Its composition includes full time staff throughout FPM who are also earning their degrees and many whom have graduated from Cal Poly Pomona.

The staff includes licensed architects and engineers, accountants, planners, project managers, administrative staff, carpenters, plumbers, locksmiths, painters, electricians, landscape architects, computer technicians, custodians and other building and mechanical trade technicians.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Vehicle/Equipment Preventative Maintenance:

  • Perform routine and preventative maintenance, including tune-ups, filter changes, and lubrication on all 2‑stroke engine equipment, such as blowers, trimmers, and chainsaws.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical failures in 2‑stroke engines and their components, including carburetors, ignition systems, fuel lines, and exhaust.

Vehicle/Equipment Repair:

  • Repairs and maintains heavy grounds, construction, and road maintenance equipment, as well as specialty machinery, including gasoline, diesel, and alternative fuel‑powered vehicles (such as compressed natural gas), tractors, sweepers, skip loaders, tractor implements, manlifts, hoists, trenchers, concrete mixers, compressors, generators, pumps, riding mowers, and more.

    Responsibilities include:

    Removing, repairing, overhauling, and installing components like engines, brake systems, clutches, transmissions, differential assemblies, hydraulic systems, water pumps (both low and high pressure), valves, piping systems, tanks, fuel injection systems, and other common accessories on construction and maintenance equipment.
  • Installing pistons, rings, and pins.
  • Adjusting bearings, cleaning carburetors, and fine‑tuning the air/fuel mixture or carburetor calibration for optimal engine performance.
  • Tuning engines and repairing ignition systems.
  • Repairing track rollers, carriers, and idlers.
  • Replacing broken parts such as gas lines, brake lines, hoist cables, steering gears, drive shafts, and other critical components.
  • May also repair or install electrical parts, including lights, wiring systems, and other accessories.
  • Utilizing a data terminal or personal computer to input and retrieve maintenance data.
  • Assembling trailers and mounting special equipment like air compressors, water pumps, or hoists.
  • Modifying equipment to meet specific requirements.
  • Perform tire and track maintenance and repairs on equipment like riding mowers and smaller construction machinery to ensure optimal functionality and safety.
  • Performing road tests on machinery to ensure functionality.
  • Operating tools and machines such as electric drills, grinders, valve facers, drill presses, hydraulic presses, hoists, motor analyzers, dynamo meters, and various gauges.
