The Controller works closely with the CFO and assists in overseeing the company's financial and accounting functions, including financial operations, month‑end close, financial reporting, risk management, and related responsibilities. He or she ensures compliance with regulatory guidelines, establishes and maintains financial policies and procedures, and drives financial strategy to enhance profitability.
Supervisory Responsibilities- Provides leadership and direction to the financial team, including accounting, accounts payable, and accounts receivable.
- Involved in the hiring and selection process, terminations, and performance evaluations of the financial team.
- Monitors direct reports’ attendance and performance.
- Oversees the operations of the Accounting Department, including Accounting, Accounts Receivable, and Accounts Payable.
- Manages monthly financial statement preparation and reporting, including coordination of the monthly close process.
- Prepares balance sheet, profit and loss, and other statements.
- Ensures quality control over financial transactions and financial reporting.
- Ensures that all financial transactions are properly recorded, filed, and reported.
- Coordinates the preparation of annual tax return with outside CPA firm.
- Creates and streamlines processes and procedures to improve efficiency.
- Maintains a documented system of accounting policies and procedures.
- Assists external auditors and provides required statements and information for the annual audit.
- Implements training for new hires and identifies training and development opportunities for current staff.
- Complies with state and local tax regulations.
- Examines financial reports and data for accuracy and compliance with federal regulations.
- Works closely with CFO/CEO and management to share reports and analysis findings.
- Produces monthly reports, which include key metrics, financial results, and variance reporting.
- Involved in annual and monthly budgeting and forecasting processes.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Operates with the highest level of conduct, integrity, and confidentiality, setting an example for leaders and associates.
- Ensures that effective internal controls are established and ensures compliance with GAAP and applicable federal, state, and local regulatory laws and rules for financial and tax reporting.
- Adheres to and enforces company policies.
- In-depth knowledge of accounting principles, financial regulations, and tax laws.
- Proficiency in accounting software and financial management systems.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to manage budgets, expenses, and negotiate with vendors and suppliers.
- Ability to build relationships and interact positively with employees, management staff and customers, even in stressful situations.
- Ability to identify issues, address them, and provide effective solutions.
- Ability to maintain compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
- Ability to adapt to changes and handle them with professionalism.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or other software programs.
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills.
- Ability to motivate and manage a team, resolve issues, and contribute to a positive work environment.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of conversations, data records, files, and other vital information.
- Ability to work independently and in a team to meet deadlines.
- Strong planning, multitasking, time management and customer service skills are most critical.
- Excellent attention to detail and accuracy in financial record‑keeping.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration required.
- Master’s degree in Accounting, Finance or Business Administration preferred.
- Ten plus years of experience in financial management required.
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
