Accountability ObjectivesFunctions as a member of the Labor & Delivery team, providing perioperative, clinical, environmental, and transportation support under the direction of the Registered Nurse. Responsible for prompt and effective problem resolution related to supplies and equipment, which impact patient care. Utilizes AST standards;
Operating Room (OR) standards; policies and procedures in performing duties related to functioning independently as scrub tech in cesarean section deliveries. Supports SJMO Core Values and beliefs during interactions with patients and co-workers.
- Applies the principles of asepsis to provide optimal patient care; maintains highest standard for sterile technique and corrects any breaks in technique.
- Participates in cleaning, stocking and maintenance of equipment in L&D; maintains a clean and safe environment per policies, LEAN concepts, and regulatory/compliance guidelines.
- Assists in setting up the OR with supplies and instruments; anticipates future supply and instrument needs of the unit.
- Prepares and transports instruments to/from CSPD for sterilization.
- Assists with transport and positioning of patients during obstetrical care, from admission to discharge.
- Anticipates the needs of the surgeon when passing instruments, sponges, sutures, etc., during obstetrical surgeries; assists within the sterile field as directed by the surgeon.
- Maintains accurate counts of sponges, needles, and instruments; collaborates with the circulating RN to ensure counts are complete before the procedure and before incision closure.
- Assists with collection, handling, and transport of laboratory specimens and performs waived testing quality controls as appropriate.
- Supports L&D Team during normal vaginal delivery and fetal demise; sets up rooms and provides basic patient care activities under RN direction.
- Performs environmental maintenance duties to facilitate patient care and room turnover.
- Acts as a relief HUC when assigned; manages intercom requests, telephone calls and departmental workflow; performs basic Cerner and HUGs functions to admit newborns and transfer patients.
- Carries team pager/phone and responds to patient emergencies and hospital events as needed.
- Participates in orientation and education of operating room staff, including students and entry-level L&D Scrub Techs.
- Serves as a unit liaison for ancillary departments and engages in handoff to the incoming L&D Scrub Tech; maintains emergency preparedness of the unit.
- Engages in unit projects and metrics; maintains department logs as assigned.
Minimum Education, Licensure / Certification And Experience
- Education:
Graduate of an approved Surgical Technologist program or equivalent work experience. - Licensure / Certification:
Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification; AST Certification recommended.
- Excellent customer service orientation; ability to interact with hospital personnel, outside customers and community groups.
- Competency in department knowledge, aseptic techniques and universal precautions specific to the operating room.
- Physical ability to lift, bend, push and pull a minimum of 50 pounds; ability to walk and stand up to 100% of work time.
- Strong interpersonal skills; ability to collaborate with patients, families, physicians and team members.
- Ability to prioritize, handle multiple tasks concurrently, and manage time amid interruptions.
- Experience:
Minimum of 2 years as Operating Room or Labor & Delivery Scrub Tech; minimum of 6 months direct caregiver experience as nursing assistant/medical assistant.
- Maintain sterile technique and assist in obstetrical procedures; ensure counts and aseptic conditions are maintained.
- Assist with instrument setup, transport, and handling; prepare for sterilization as needed.
- Support patient care from admission to discharge; assist with room setup and post-delivery care.
- Provide assistance with specimen handling, lab support, and basic point-of-care tasks as directed.
- Collaborate with the L&D team to ensure efficient patient flow and safety; participate in unit projects and safety initiatives.
- Potential exposure to infectious diseases, hazardous waste, and chemicals; compliance with safety procedures reduces risk.
- Working in a surgical environment with exposure to blood-borne pathogens and hazardous substances; safety protocols must be followed.
- Working weekends and holidays; shifts may vary to meet staffing needs.
