The Patient Support Technician functions as a collaborative member of the healthcare team in partnership with and under supervision of the Registered Nurse, utilizing principles of Relationship‑Based Care. The role provides direct patient care to a specific group of patients and coordinates activities that relate to the flow of unit processes. Actively supports the activities of the unit‑based shared governance council, promoting organizational commitment and excellence in patient care experience.
EssentialFunctions
- Demonstrate principles of Relationship‑Based Care to cultivate and maintain therapeutic relationships with patients and the interdisciplinary care team.
- Provide patient care that reflects respect for patients' rights, dignity, cultural preferences, and expressed needs, ensuring comfort and pain relief.
- Perform basic bedside care and selected procedures under RN supervision: venipuncture, 12‑lead ECG, basic blood glucose collection, respiratory care (cough, incentive spirometry, pulse oximetry, oxygen setup, hand‑held nebulizer), dressing changes, vital sign collection, and recognition of life‑threatening conditions with initial responses.
- Perform activities of daily living (ADL) appropriate to the patient's condition under RN supervision.
- Initiate and maintain patient medical records.
- Manage communication for the unit, including placing and receiving calls from physicians, other departments, and visitors.
- Maintain an accurate patient roster/census and available ready beds.
- Assist with patient education under RN direction.

- Assist with admission processes: collecting assessment data, applying necessary equipment, labeling patient belongings, informing families of unit routines.
- Provide individualized care consistent with the plan of care under RN supervision.
- Actively engage in unit‑based and other committees that promote patient and workplace safety, optimal outcomes, and satisfaction.
- Report changes in patient condition to RN in a timely manner.
- Demonstrate proper body mechanics and professional conduct.
- Perform other duties as assigned; duties may vary by unit, patient type, and complexity of treatment.
- Maintain knowledge of applicable laws, the Trinity Health Organizational Integrity Program, code of ethics, and other policies.
- Support customer‑service expectations and revenue management practices as outlined by unit or departmental standards.
