About the role

Arts University Bournemouth is renowned globally as a professional arts university, dedicated to turning creativity into careers. Our culture of making, performing, and shaping cultures is at the heart of our learning, research and engagement. Our values speak of collaboration, connectedness and innovative practice, underpinned by a passion for our academic disciplines and extensive partnerships with industry, professions and communities.

With a history spanning over 50 years, Bournemouth Film School (BFS) sits at the heart of Arts University Bournemouth and brings together the disciplines of acting, animation, costume, creative writing, dance, movement and creative practice, film production, games art and design, and make-up, hair and prosthetics. Courses are modelled on contemporary industry practice, contextualised by a philosophy of practical learning in an academic environment.

We are currently seeking an enthusiastic and technically minded Technician to support students and staff across our film production facilities, and to contribute to team deliverables across Bournemouth Film School. The position offers an excellent opportunity for someone looking to begin a career in film production support within a creative higher education environment.

The successful candidate will assist with the preparation, maintenance, loan, and operation of professional film production equipment while helping students develop safe and effective working practices. The role involves supporting a wide range of projects, from student exercises to major graduation productions.

Knowledgeable across technical areas of film production, you will support colleagues during their delivery of taught sessions, inductions, demonstrations and workshops, drawing on your knowledge of camera, lighting, grip, sound, set construction and/or post‑production equipment and associated software. With an understanding of the practices and challenges of professional filmmaking, you will need to be conversant with good workplace health, safety and welfare procedures.

Ideally educated to undergraduate degree level, you must hold a minimum level 3 qualification in a relevant subject, and GCSE, minimum grade C/5, or equivalent, English and Maths. The successful candidate will participate in continuous professional development activities to ensure subject knowledge and experience is maintained in line with industry trends.

You will need to be flexible in your approach to the working day and environment as this varied post supports a diverse range of individuals and will entail evening and weekend working. Regular travel to the university’s satellite sites and external venues or locations will be required, for which holding a full UK driving licence, or being able to obtain one within a specified period following appointment is essential.

This role would suit a recent film production graduate or someone with early industry experience looking to develop a career in technical support within higher education and the screen industries.

In meeting your performance expectations, you’ll receive an annual salary increase in line with the grade of your role.…
