SEMH Teaching Assistant / Behaviour Specialist
Location: Poole, Dorset
Start Date: September 2026
Hours: Full Time, Term Time Only
Pay: £95–£105 per day (dependent on experience)
Axcis Education is partnering with a specialist SEND school in Poole to recruit skilled SEMH Teaching Assistants, Behaviour Mentors and Pastoral Support Professionals. The setting provides primary‑aged pupils with Education, Health and Care Plans for Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs, many of whom also have Autism Spectrum Condition diagnoses.
Responsibilities- Provide targeted 1:1 and small‑group support for pupils with SEMH and ASC needs
- Build meaningful, trusting relationships with children requiring consistency, patience and understanding
- Support emotional regulation and implement therapeutic and trauma‑informed strategies
- Act as a positive role model throughout the school day
- Manage and de‑escalate challenging behaviours with confidence and professionalism
- Work alongside teachers, therapists and pastoral teams to deliver personalised support
- Encourage engagement in learning and assist pupils in meeting their individual targets
- Promote self‑esteem, resilience and positive outcomes for every child
- Substantial experience supporting children or young people with SEMH needs
- Past role as a Behaviour Mentor, Youth Worker, Teaching Assistant, Support Worker, Pastoral Practitioner or similar
- Strong understanding of trauma, attachment needs and behaviour as communication
- Ability to remain calm, resilient and solution‑focused in challenging situations
- Confidence in implementing behaviour support and de‑escalation strategies
- Capacity to build positive professional relationships while maintaining clear boundaries
- Passion for supporting vulnerable pupils to overcome barriers and succeed
- GCSE Grade C/4 or above in English and Maths (essential)
- Relevant qualifications or degree‑level education are desirable
