Machine Shop Team Leader – IMI plc

Role OverviewThis role manages colleagues working shift patterns to deliver high machine shop performance and achieve business KPIs.
Key Responsibilities- Ensure all COSHH and risk assessments are in place and up to date.
- Work closely with the management team to apply a consistent approach across all shifts.
- Lead and manage the team leader role – onboarding, setting targets, conducting appraisals and identifying training needs.
- Handle employee relations – oversee absence management, disciplinary, capability and grievance matters.
- Confirm shift team competence and monitor performance.
- Identify training needs and liaise with line manager to deliver training, maintaining training matrices.
- Work with Planning to meet weekly targets and maintain on‑time delivery.
- Manage health and safety, wellbeing and first aid coverage.
- Support meetings and continuous improvement initiatives using lean tools.
- Lead root cause analysis for accidents or near misses and drive improvements.
- Participate in site opening, closing and emergency call outs.
- Assist in best practice, continuous improvement of manufacturing methods.
- Attend toolbox talks and daily shift team meetings.
- Analyse key performance indicators and cascade improvements.
- Recruit and build a winning team following company policies.
- Monitor time, attendance and job bookings, ensuring full shift compliance.
- Maintain high machine and equipment standards using TPM.
- Take lead in root cause analysis events for quality target breaches.
- Ensure adherence to standard operating procedures.
- Perform other duties commensurate with the post as reasonably required.
- Experience in people management and team leadership.
- Strong influence and team player skills.
- Understanding of health and safety requirements.
- Experience setting and running machine tools.
- Calm under pressure, positive attitude.
- Excellent organisational, time management and planning skills.
- Experience in CNC programming.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook).
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Understanding of modern lean manufacturing methods and assembly techniques.
- Continuous improvement tools (VSM, SMED, TPM, Kaizen, 5S, error proofing, Kanban).
Early Shift – Mon–Thu 6:00–14:15, Fri 6:00–12:00. Late Shift – Mon–Thu 14:15–22:15, Fri 12:00–19:30. Two weeks early then two weeks late.
