Title: Assistant Coach

Reports To: Head Coach and the Director of Athletics and Activities

  • Employment terms covering compensation, benefits, and working conditions are specified by the Board of Education’s policies, procedures, and agreements.
  • Extra‑duty stipend position, in addition to the certified role, determined by the district’s salary schedule for the specific sport.
  • Seasonal commitment based on the sport season, including pre‑season, regular season, and post‑season responsibilities.
  • Annual appointment, subject to renewal based on performance and program needs.
  • Vary by season and competition schedule; includes after‑school hours, evenings, and occasional weekends.

Position Overview

The Assistant Coach supports the Head Coach in all aspects of team leadership, including practice planning, skill development, and game‑day preparation. This role helps foster a positive, inclusive, and disciplined team environment that emphasizes sportsmanship, academic success, and student‑athlete growth. The Assistant Coach works closely with the Head Coach and athletic staff to ensure the program aligns with school and district expectations.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in education preferred or minimum of 36 college hours or online 20‑hour substitute training.
  • Valid Missouri Teacher Certificate preferred.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Skills in human relations, leadership, and conflict management.
  • Knowledgeable of coaching techniques that meet the diverse needs of students.
  • Knowledgeable of and adhere to all local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Abide by all rules and regulations established by the Poplar Bluff R‑I Board of Education.
  • Abide by and uphold all rules and regulations established by the Missouri State High School Activities Association.
  • Actively pursue the licensure to drive a school bus suitable for the sport they are coaching.
Performance Responsibilities
  • Coach individual participants in the skills necessary for excellent achievement in the sport involved.
  • Assist in making plans and scheduling a regular program of practice in season.
  • Work with the Head Coach and Athletic Director in scheduling interscholastic contests.
  • Assist in making recommendations to purchase equipment, supplies, and uniforms, as appropriate.
  • Assist in maintaining an accurate, up‑to‑date inventory of all uniforms and equipment as appropriate.
  • Assist with necessary attendance forms, insurance records, and similar paperwork.
  • Assist in overseeing the safety conditions of the facility or area where the assigned sport is conducted.
  • Assist in establishing performance criteria for eligibility in interscholastic competition in his/her sport.
  • Enforces discipline and sportsman‑like behavior at all times, and assists in establishing and overseeing penalties for breach of such standards by individual students.
  • Has a good working knowledge of the rules and regulations of the sport he or she is coaching.
  • As a representative of the Poplar Bluff R‑I School District, the assistant coach will reflect a favorable impression of our school system to other schools and communities.

  • Follow all building and department rules and procedures.
  • Have the desire to create a positive influence on players, fans, colleagues, and others to win. The desire to win should never override the health, safety, or welfare of the athletes.
  • Possesses strong values and work ethic.
  • Motivate those directly and indirectly associated with the program to have a supportive sense of ownership of the program.
  • Promote the athletic program by strategically involving others, including parents and media.
  • Establish and maintain positive relationships with persons involved in the school’s operation.
  • Have the understanding and control required to respond to a total setting even during the most highly pitched emotional situation.
  • Be organized and prepared. The coach remains flexible at all times, remaining constantly aware of the need for revision and change.
