The Role

HII (Huntington Ingalls Industries) seeks an experienced and dynamic attorney to act as Senior Counsel at its Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) Division. NNS designs and builds the most advanced ships in the world using its expertise in nuclear propulsion, naval design, and high-tech manufacturing. NNS is currently building the new Ford-class aircraft carriers and Virginia-class fast-attack submarines, modules for Columbia-class ballistic-missile submarines, and performing Refueling and Complex Overhaul (RCOH) on Nimitz-class aircraft carriers.

NNS also provides fleet support services in Navy ports worldwide. With approximately $6 billion in revenues and more than 25,000 employees, NNS is the largest industrial employer in Virginia and the largest shipbuilding company in the United States.

The selected attorney will have overall responsibility, accountability, and authority for legal matters across NNS’s portfolio of government contracts and serve as program counsel to one of NNS’s major business lines. This position will report directly to the Vice President and Chief Counsel of NNS.

RESPONSIBILITES:
  • Provide legal expertise, business counsel, and training to NNS’s Contracts and Pricing and Business Management organizations on all aspects of government contracting including fiscal law, changes, data rights, cost and pricing issues, false claims, cost accounting standards, and the nuances of sole source contracting.
  • Provide business-centric counsel to a broad group of business partners. Train, mentor, and partner with colleagues and clients across the business, at all levels of expertise.
  • Build a broad and deep understanding of significant legal considerations and seamlessly integrate practical business advice into legal counsel with an emphasis on positioning the business to avoid potential problems in addition to meeting day-to-day challenges.
  • Provide strategic and day-to-day legal and business counsel to NNS’s leadership team, including the Vice President level.
  • Draft, review, and advise on commercial supplier agreements, teaming agreements, letters of intent, memorandums of understanding, non-disclosure agreements, supplier terms, and similar agreements adjacent to, but outside of, the traditional instruments of government contracting.
  • Provide assistance with other significant NNS matters and assume additional law department responsibilities as needed; additional duties may include advising functions such as operations, facilities, intellectual property, or ethics.
Must Have

Juris Doctor Law degree and 9 years of experience

Nice to Have

JD and Virginia State Bar membership (or the ability to obtain state corporate counsel license), plus 9 years of experience as a practicing attorney with substantial experience in Government Contracts law, and experience in commercial contracting and counseling. Must have active security clearance or the ability to obtain/maintain a security clearance.
