Outside Machinist ResponsibilitiesOutside machinists install, groom, and test the ship’s major mechanical components and systems on commercial or naval ships in various stages of new construction, overhaul or repair. Examples of components are steam turbines, reduction gears, propellers, reactor components, catapults, weapons systems, periscopes, and can be as diverse as laundry, food service or refrigeration equipment. Outside machinists operate a wide variety of tools and machinery ranging from wrenches and screwdrivers to complex and sophisticated equipment such as saws, drill presses, optical equipment, mills, portable machines, boring equipment, precision grinders, instruments and lathes.
MustHave Qualifications
- 18 years of age or older and legally eligible to work in the U.S.
- Can climb ladders and work at extreme heights.
- Can work in small, tight, or confined spaces.
- Can kneel, squat, crawl, bend, stoop, and climb on a daily basis.
- Can lift heavy objects weighing 40 lbs. or more.
- Can work while repeatedly reaching overhead.
- Can work indoors or outdoors year-round in all weather conditions.
- Can work in areas with radiation.
- Can take and pass a respirator fit test.
- Can take and pass a Physical Agility Test.
Qualified candidates must have three (3) or more years experience as a machinist, machinist mate, mechanic/automotive repairman, engine man, heavy equipment repairman or similar experience.
Nice to Have- Prior mechanical experience such as automotive repair, plant maintenance, machinery installation/repair is a plus.
- Successful completion of a technical/vocational program in machining, diesel technology, automotive, HVAC, mechanical.
