The Equipment Operator I is responsible for operating a variety of light to medium duty equipment in support of construction and maintenance projects. This role involves safely and efficiently operating equipment, performing routine maintenance, and adhering to all safety regulations.

General Definition of Work
:

Performs skilled work operating a variety of small to medium automotive, construction and specialty equipment, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Public Works Supervisor. Limited oversight is exercised over workers.

Qualification Requirements
:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Essential Functions
:

-Performs general infrastructure maintenance on streets, street signs and drainage projects.

-Performs preventive maintenance on equipment.

-Manages and oversees small crews to complete job assignments and operates smaller to medium sized motorized equipment including asphalt patching units, farm tractors, small dump trucks and other small motorized equipment.

-Responds to citizen complaints and department requests.

-Assists other departments as needed.

-Other duties as assigned/requested/required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
:

General knowledge of the operation, maintenance, capabilities and limitations of equipment used in area of assignment; general knowledge of the occupational hazards and proper safety precautions involved in the operation of equipment; thorough knowledge of traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation; skill in the operation of equipment; ability to understand and follow specific oral instructions; ability to detect signs of mechanical failure of equipment;

ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.

Education and Experience
:

High school diploma or GED, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Physical Requirements
:

This work requires the regular exertion of up to 25 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, walking, speaking or hearing, using hands to handle or feel, pushing or pulling, lifting and repetitive motions, frequently requires climbing or balancing, reaching with hands and arms and tasting or smelling and occasionally requires stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling;
