DEFINITION
To provide responsible medical care for a socio-economic, ethnically diverse patient group within the scope of credentials and training as authorized by physician.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Appointment to this classification indicates completion of a professional training program resulting in the ability to assume a number of roles in a health care setting. Said individuals are to be proficient in multi-tasking administrative and clinical assignments. As direct patient contact staff they are to be equipped to communicate with, and effectively serve, an ethnically and socio-economically diverse patient group.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives general supervision from the administrative and nursing staff. May exercise technical and functional supervision over less experienced staff.

EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES -

  • Exhibit professional general medical knowledge, including terminology, anatomy, physiology, behavioral science, and medical law and ethics.
  • Exhibit professional administrative ability including medical records management, collections, insurance processing, etc.
  • Demonstrate professional clinical knowledge, including examination room techniques, medication preparation and administration, pharmacology, laboratory procedures, injection and venipuncture procedures.
  • Provide a variety of advanced medical care services to assigned patients; assist in regulating clinic flow.
  • Assist physicians and other medical/professional staff with examinations and treatments.
  • Make entries into, update, and maintain medical records system.
  • Administer medications as prescribed by a physician.
  • Monitor vital signs; take blood pressures and pulse rates; obtain specimens for laboratory tests.
  • Document health care, medication and visual observations; advise appropriate staff of changes in condition or patient progress.
  • Provide input as a member of a health care team in planning, implementing and evaluating nursing care.
  • Instruct patients in the proper procedures and alternatives for health care; refer patients as appropriate.
  • Assist in diet planning; impart basic elements of nutrition to patients.
  • Inventory drugs and supplies and stock as directed.
  • Assist in the development of new procedures.
  • Attend workshops, conferences, and in-service training sessions to improve vocational nursing skills and knowledge.

Maintain mental capacity which allows the capabilities to:

  • exercise sound judgment and rational thinking under stressful circumstances
  • evaluate various options and alternatives and choose an appropriate and reasonable course of action
  • prepare complex policies and recommendations
  • effectively supervise personnel
  • operate effectively in an economically and culturally diverse environment

Maintain physical condition which will allow the capability to perform the following:

  • running, walking, or standing for extended periods of time
  • climbing stairs or ladders
  • moving loads of approximately 25 - 50 lbs.

Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception for:

  • making observations
  • reading and writing
  • operating necessary and assigned equipment
  • communicating with others

Effectively deal with personal danger which may include exposure to:

  • contagious and deadly disease
  • contaminated materials and equipment
  • undiagnosed infections and/or communicable diseases

Performs related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

  • Principles and practices of general medical standards of care.
  • Medical terminology and its application to assigned responsibilities.
  • Proper methods used in checking vital signs.
  • Anatomy and physiology.
