ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS- Assigns, trains, schedules, evaluates and supervises lifeguards; prioritizes and assigns work; monitors work in progress and inspects completed work; records and updates all lifeguard certifications; ensures compliance with policies and procedures; and provides technical expertise in complex and difficult situations.
- Maintains the appearance and cleanliness of aquatic facilities including pool, deck, offices, storage rooms, pump rooms, and restrooms; conducts water quality testing; monitors water quality to ensure compliance with established water quality standards; adjusts chemicals as needed; and maintains work areas gathering trash, spraying decks, cleaning restrooms, etc.
- Coordinates and conducts a comprehensive aquatic program teaching all levels of swimming, lifeguard, CPR and first aid classes; initiates, organizes, schedules, coordinates, and promotes aquatic programs and events; coordinates aquatic services with those in related areas and the community.
- Monitors the activities of swimmers in and around the swimming pool; enforces all pool rules and regulations and water safety policies and practices.
- Responds to any and all emergency situations; rescues swimmers in distress utilizing appropriate rescue techniques; administers first aid and/or CPR, AED, and oxygen administration following appropriate medical protocol; and calls for emergency assistance when necessary.
- Maintains inventory of first aid and rescue equipment and supplies; conducts daily opening, closing, and facility safety inspection checklists; replenishes or replaces supplies and equipment as needed; prepares and processes purchase orders for pool supplies and equipment.
- Prepares written reports on accidents, incidents, first aid, etc.; completes other reports or records as required.
- Performs basic administrative duties including written reports, memorandums, interaction with others, and communication through telephone and meetings.
- May provide temporary supervision and facility support to other locations in the absence of the Recreation Supervisor.
- Provides exceptional customer assistance, problem‑solving, and/or complaint resolution by all forms of communication.
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Two (2) years of experience in lifeguarding or aquatics instruction and programming
- Must maintain a valid driver’s license.
- Must possess and maintain the following certifications from the American Red Cross:
Lifeguard, First Aid, CPR. - Must obtain and maintain the following certifications and licensures within six (6) months of hire:
Water Safety Instructor, Certified Pool Operator or Aquatic Facility Operator. - Must obtain and maintain the following certifications and licensures within one (1) year of hire:
Water Safety Instructor Trainer, Lifeguard Instructor Trainer.
- Knowledge of departmental policies, plans, and procedures.
- Knowledge of modern office practices, plans, and procedures.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other job‑related computer programs and software applications.
- Knowledge of modern governmental office practices, procedures, equipment, and standard clerical/administrative support techniques.
- Knowledge of rescue methods and first aid as applies to accidents in the water and surrounding areas.
- Knowledge of Charlotte County Parks and Recreation Department’s pool safety operating procedures.
- Knowledge of pool chemistry and pool filtration systems.
- Analytical and research skills.
- Skills in swimming, rescue work, resuscitation and first aid.
- Skill in effective communication, both orally and in writing.
