Road Patrol Deputy

Provide for public safety by maintaining order, responding to emergencies, protecting people and property, enforcing motor vehicle and criminal laws, and promoting good community relations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Perform responsible law enforcement and investigation work to maintain law and order throughout the County.
• Monitor, report and investigate suspicious persons and situations, safety hazards, unusual or illegal activity.
• Identify, pursue, and apprehend suspects and perpetrators of criminal acts.
• Patrol assigned area, responding promptly to calls for assistance.
• Review facts of incidents to determine if criminal act or statute violations were involved.
• Monitor traffic to ensure motorists observe traffic regulations and exhibit safe driving procedures.
  
  Issue citations or warnings to violators of motor vehicle ordinances.
• Take control of accident scenes to maintain traffic flow, direct traffic and establish road blocks, assist accident victims and investigate causes.
• Render aid to accident victims and other persons requiring first aid for physical injuries.
• Investigate traffic accidents and other accidents to determine causes and to determine if a crime has been committed.
• Testify in court to present evidence or act as witness in traffic and criminal cases.
• Photograph or draw diagrams of crime or accident scenes and interview principals and eyewitnesses; record crime or accident scene evidence with video or still cameras.
• Relay complaint and emergency-request information to appropriate agency dispatchers.
• Evaluate complaint and emergency-request information to determine response requirements.
• Execute arrest warrants, locating and taking persons into custody.
• Verify that the proper legal charges have been made against offenders.
• Book, search and fingerprint arrested persons as required.
• Process prisoners, and prepare and maintain records of prisoner bookings and prisoner status during booking and pre-trial process.
• Serve legal papers and escort prisoners to court or to state institutions.
• Record daily activities; prepare and submit logs and other related reports and paperwork.
• Provide information and assistance to the general public.
• Provide emergency first aid and operate AED.
• May guard prisoners and supervise trustees.
• May perform specialized activities such as summer boat patrol, special assignments and public relations activities.
• Record facts to prepare reports that document incidents and activities.
• Other duties as assigned.

• High school diploma (GED acceptable) required;
  Associate's degree in correctional sciences, law enforcement, criminal justice or closely related field is preferred.
• Must be at least 21 years of age
• Reasonable work experience which would indicate dependability, maturity and ability to exercise good judgment.
• Corrections Deputies and Professional Employees POAM current labor agreement section 17.9 states:
  Full time Corrections Deputies who wish to test for Sheriff Deputy positions must be minimally qualified. Minimally qualified shall mean have completed one (1) year of full time service with the Sheriff's Department. Further, prior to the career change the Corrections Deputy has passed the two (2) part MCOLES pre-academy entry test (written and physical agility) and possesses the required certification card from the Michigan Commission On Law Enforcement Standards.
• Reasonable knowledge of the geography of the County.
• Reasonable knowledge of driving rules and regulations and of pertinent state and local laws and ordinances.
• Ability to act quickly in emergencies.
