Parks Planning Summer Student

Salary Range: $29.71/Hour

Planning & Design Support
- Assist with site analysis, concept development, and preparation of planning and design graphics for parks, open spaces, and trails.
- Participate in site visits to document conditions and gather information relevant to ongoing projects.
- Prepare maps, diagrams, and visual materials using Adobe Creative Suite and GIS tools.
- Participate in discussions and internal working sessions that inform planning and design directions.
Research & Policy Support
- Conduct research to support park plans, strategic initiatives, and citywide policies.
- Compile and organize data related to ecological features, recreation needs, site conditions, and planning precedents.
- Assist with preparing summaries, briefing notes, or background materials.
Project Coordination & Engagement Support
- Support the planning for public and stakeholder engagements.
- Participate in public engagement activities when applicable, including assisting with pop-up events or helping analyze community feedback.
- Assist with coordination between City departments working on park related initiatives.
Qualifications
- Minimum 2 years of post secondary education in Landscape Architecture, Planning, Urban Design, Environmental Studies, or a related field.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to summarize research and prepare supporting materials.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
- Foundational experience in site analysis, planning, or design.
- Must be returning to full time studies in Fall 2026.
Preferred Experience
- Working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign).
- Familiarity with GIS (ArcGIS or QGIS).
- Experience preparing planning or design graphics for academic or applied projects.
- Understanding of sustainable, inclusive, and accessible design principles.
- Experience participating in collaborative design processes (studio work, charrettes, group projects).
- Exposure to public engagement or community facing work.
- Exposure to working in an office environment considered an asset.
- Valid Class 5 Driver’s Licence (asset but not required).
