Description: The City of Port Moody has an opportunity for three current post-secondary students to join our team this summer as Environment & Parks Technical Support students.
As Port Moody is a shoreline community surrounded by forested mountains, encounters with wildlife are common throughout parks, trails, and urban areas. The City of Port Moody engages multiple strategies to proactively protect forests and riparian areas, create engaging community experiences, and provide exceptional customer service to the public. This is accomplished through internal collaboration between multiple departments, as well as external collaboration with valued stewardship groups.
Within the City, staff teams who work closely together on environmental issues include Environment, Urban Forestry, Parks, Solid Waste, and Bylaws. This team effort brings together the many facets of environmental management, including education and outreach, wildlife habitat enhancement, ecological restoration, attractant management, and enforcement. City staff also regularly collaborate with community-based stewardship groups, whose dedication to resources such as fish hatcheries, heron and bat colonies, marine intertidal species, and invasive plants are integral to the preservation and resilience of Port Moody’s many natural assets.
The City of Port Moody is seeking additional seasonal support for special projects related to Environment and Parks, especially with respect to outreach and targeted education campaigns. This indoor position also includes some outdoor work in all-weather conditions. The incumbent will be responsible for interacting regularly with the public, exercising tact, professional conduct, and good judgement. The incumbent should demonstrate attention to detail and time management and must be able to work independently under minimal supervision.
Responsibilities- Increase City presence in park spaces, natural areas, and community spheres by implementing popup events and topic-based workshops to deliver outreach and educational presentations.
- Advance existing initiatives across Environment, Parks, and Solid Waste, and integrate mandates of all three departments with the objectives of reducing human-wildlife conflicts, protecting natural habitats, cataloguing environmental assets, and enhancing community resilience.
- Support Parks with the implementation of the Urban Forest Management Strategy.
- Assist with field activities as needed, including wildlife monitoring, water-quality sampling, instream logger downloads, tree inventory management, and GIS mapping.
- Regularly collaborate with government organizations (such as the BC Conservation Officer Service), environmental stewardship volunteers, community groups, and non-government organizations.
- Support Parks on matters related to community and urban planning, such as conducting research, collecting, and analyzing data, liaising with internal departments and external consultants, assisting with report writing, preparing presentations, and organizing stakeholder/public consultations.
- Support Solid Waste with curbside waste contamination audits as part of wildlife attractant-management strategies, including data entry, community outreach, and reporting.
- Regularly correspond with members of the public, including answering questions, providing resources, and responding to inquiries in person, via email, or over the phone.
- Minimum 2 years of post-secondary education, preferably in one or more of the following fields: environmental studies, forestry or arboriculture, landscape architecture, solid waste management, community planning or urban planning, biology, or public relations or communications.
- Minimum 3 years of work experience interacting with members of the public, including stakeholder engagement, community outreach, customer service, or public consultation.
