Purpose Statement
The job of Interpreter is done for the purpose/s of providing support to the instructional program, i.e. certificated staff member and/or students with specific responsibilities for translating a variety of documents and interpreting for functions and meetings; documents to/from target language primarily in support of the education program. Interprets teacher's American Sign Language (ASL) for the purpose of relaying necessary information to students in order for them to gain subject knowledge.
Essential Functions:
- Collaborates with certificated staff member for the purpose of leading, guiding, and/or coordinating with students;
- Interprets spoken language to sign language and reverse for the purpose of enabling students and staff to relay information so that student and teacher can understand one another;
- Interprets teacher's ASL for the purpose of relaying necessary information to students in order for them to gain subject knowledge;
- Monitors student interactions for the purpose of providing accurate and timely feedback to the classroom teacher;
- Participates in meetings and trainings for the purpose of sharing information and/or improving the employee's skills and knowledge;
- Provides clerical and general classroom assistance for staff (e.g. collecting and inputting data, correspondence, copying, filing, preparing, and organizing instructional materials, etc.) for the purpose of providing general support for classroom activities related to learning goals and objectives;
- Responsibilities include working under limited supervision using standardized practices and/or methods (e.g. leading, guiding, coordinating others, etc.) for the purpose of operating within a defined budget;
- Utilization of some resources from other work units may be required for the purpose of performing required job functions.
Other Functions:
- Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
SKILLS are required to perform single, technical tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: preparing and maintaining accurate records.
KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math; read technical information, compose a variety of documents, and/or facilitate group discussions; and solve practical problems. Specific knowledge-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include:
American Sign Language (ASL) or Signing Exact English (SEE).
ABILITY is required to schedule activities; often gather, collate, and/or classify data; and use job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined but different processes; and operate equipment using standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with a variety of data;
and utilize job-related equipment. Problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data frequently requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is limited to moderate. Specific ability-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: communicating with diverse groups; establishing and maintaining cooperative and effective working relationships with others;
and maintaining confidentiality.
