Summary of position:Under the direction of the assigned supervisor, the Corrections Officer 2 (Lateral) performs more complex detention duties based on increased experience in a detention facility. Incumbents perform booking, searching, releasing, transportation, supervision, and security work for the Sheriff's Office Jail. Employees are expected to handle a variety of potentially volatile and dangerous situations in a calm and competent manner. This classification is responsible for the operation of the Sheriff's Office Jail 24/7.
Work is reviewed by the Corrections Sergeant through observation and evaluation of ability to handle various situations.
Kitsap County values the wellness of our Corrections staff. We offer a work schedule of 10-hour, 40-minute shifts, with a rotating schedule of 5 days on/4 days off, then 5 days on/5 days off.
RequiredEducation and Experience
- High school diploma or GED
- Completion of Washington State Criminal Justice Corrections Academy or equivalent certification recognized by CJTC
- Successful completion of agency's corrections FTO/training programs
- Within one year of hire, successful completion of WSCJTC Equivalency Academy
- Applicants separated from employment for more than one year as a Corrections Officer are not eligible for the lateral position but can apply for Corrections Officer 1
- Employment from other law enforcement agencies will be evaluated case-by-case
- Applicants disqualified if they resigned in lieu of termination or were discharged for misconduct from a full-time law enforcement position
- Candidates without to attend the equivalency academy will receive 5% preference points
Prior to employment, candidates must:
- Have completed the required academy or equivalent certification
- Pass multi-phase testing including physical agility, oral interview, background check, and lie detection
- Pass medical/physical and psychological evaluations
- Provide a valid Washington State driver's license
Within one year of employment, candidates must pass probation and attain career status. During employment, completion of required training is necessary.

- Attendance, shift work, teamwork, decision-making, communication skills, physical fitness, and ability to handle stressful situations
Work involves jail environment, vehicle operation, exposure to weather, physical restraint, and emergency response. Must meet physical demands including running, jumping, restraining inmates, and responding to hazards.
