POSITION SUMMARY
This position requires the applicant to successfully pass a drug screening. The starting salary for this position depends on qualifications and is as follows:
Building Construction Inspector I – $32.31 – $37.15;
Building Construction Inspector II – $33.92 – $39.01;
Building Construction Inspector III – $35.62 – $40.96;
Building Construction Inspector IV – $37.40 – $43.01. Technical work conducting building inspections to ensure compliance with existing codes, ordinances and statutes facilitates the development of public trust and confidence in the City. This position is considered an “Essential Position” for the purpose of Emergency Management and requires 24‑hour, 7‑day availability as directed by City Administrators, the Emergency Manager or City Officials.
DUTIES
- Keep the mission, vision, and values of the City of Port St. Lucie at the forefront of decision making and action; build strategic and collaborative relationships and interact with others in a way that builds confidence and trust; provide excellent customer service by taking action to accomplish objectives, and maintain high levels of work and productivity by generating innovative solutions to work situations.
- Conduct site visits to perform building inspections.
- Confere with contractors to explain corrective action necessary for voluntary compliance.
- Record and document all building inspections.
- Provide information and assistance to the public, contractors or other employees.
- Keep supervisors apprised of all building inspection activities.
- Access, input and retrieve information from a computer.
- Other duties as may be assigned.
- Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma.
- Five (5) years of experience in construction, design or inspections of buildings as a supervisor or contractor and possession of one valid building inspector certification or the ability to obtain certification within twelve (12) months of hire.
- Six (6) years of experience and possession of two valid building inspector certifications.
- Seven (7) years of experience and possession of three valid building inspector certifications.
- Eight (8) years of experience and possession of four valid building inspector certifications or the One‑ and Two‑Dwelling Inspector Certification.
- Possession of a valid Florida Driver’s License and maintenance of a clean driving record.
- Possession and maintenance of State of Florida‑mandated licensing requirements.
- Knowledge of principles and practices of building construction.
- Knowledge of building codes.
- Skill in using standard equipment and testing devices.
- Skill in correcting defects in building construction.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the public.
- Ability to interpret technical designs and blueprints.
- Ability to enforce building codes.
- Ability to focus on the positive in every situation.
- Ability to model respect for individuals, teams, and the organization.
- Ability to stay centered when challenged.
- Ability to establish and maintain the trust and confidence of the department and public.
- Ability to communicate effectively in writing and orally.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
