Job DescriptionESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Instructing ESL students with varying degrees of English language proficiency and literacy development.
- Assisting students in the ESL language laboratories, including the Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) labs.
- Cultivating and maintaining an ESL learning environment that is focused on student success.
- Maintaining certification according to SACS requirements.
- Schedule is two nights a week from 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm.
- Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in English as a Second Language (ESL), English, Foreign Language or a related field.
- Coursework and/or experience in teaching English as a Second Language (ESL).
- Flexibility in work hours.
- Computer proficiency in basic computer applications, such as Microsoft Office and the internet.
- Ability to communicate and work effectively with students from diverse cultural and language backgrounds, including students with limited education in their native language.
- Ability to pay close attention to detail as well as the possession of good judgment and a strong work ethic.
- All instructors must meet the appropriate credentialing requirements for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS).
- Instructing assigned classes using communicating language techniques and instructional technology.
- Making phone calls to absent students to ensure that all students attend regularly.
- Preparing lesson plans and keeping attendance records per ESL protocol.
- Instruction in language laboratories including computer laboratories.
- Completing in-service training and attending ESL adjunct faculty meetings on an as-needed basis.
- Maintaining an awareness of current college and department policies and guidelines.
- Completing other responsibilities as assigned by the department chair and/or ESL Program Developer.
This position requires an ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time and to present verbal lectures/demonstrations, walk, bend, lift, reach up, stoop, and carry items occasionally in excess of twenty-five (25) pounds. Some lifting of computer and electronic equipment may be required. It also requires manual dexterity to operate standard office machines, such as, copier, fax, calculator, telephone, and other equipment as necessary.
