Overview

Manual and mechanical work of ordinary difficulty and responsibility in connection with wastewater treatment plant operation as a trainee. Facilitates the development of public trust and confidence in the City and its Utility.

Key Responsibilities
  • Keeps the mission, vision and values of the City of Port St. Lucie and Utility Systems Department at the forefront of decision making and action; builds strategic and collaborative relationships and interacts with others in a way that builds confidence and trust; provides excellent customer service by taking action to accomplish objectives, maintaining high levels of work and productivity by generating innovative solutions to work situations.
  • Assist in the operation and maintenance of complex advanced treatment facilities with both manual and automated control systems.
  • Assist in the operation and maintenance of pumps, equipment, and mechanical/automatic controls to maintain proper treatment and disposal processes.
  • Check treatment facilities routinely for proper operation and record daily meter readings.
  • Regular and punctual attendance.
  • Check, read, and interpret the plant SCADA system.
  • Take wastewater samples for biological, bacterial, and chemical tests.
  • Assist in running chlorine residual and process control tests.
  • Assist in the collection of data for daily and monthly reports for submittal to regulatory agencies.
  • Exercise and maintain pumps, controls, meters, and related equipment.
  • Perform planned preventative maintenance and scheduled operational duties.
  • Perform data entry.
  • Perform general housekeeping.
  • Other duties as may be assigned.

THIS POSITION REQUIRES ROTATING SHIFT WORK, SCHEDULED/UNSCHEDULED OVERTIME, INCLUDING EVENINGS, WEEKENDS AND HOLIDAYS AND/OR IMMEDIATE RESPONSE TO EMERGENCY CONDITIONS.

Qualifications
  • Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma required. Prior utility systems experience preferred.
  • Successful completion of volumes 1 and 2 of the Wastewater Operations Sacramento courses preferred.
  • Must be able to immediately respond to emergency conditions at the designated Wastewater Treatment Plant.
  • Proof of current enrollment or completion of a wastewater treatment course recognized by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection required.
  • Class C Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator’s License as issued by the State of Florida must be obtained within eighteen months from date of hire in accordance with Florida Department of Environmental Protection regulations.
  • Possession of valid driver’s license and maintenance of clean driving record required with the ability to obtain a valid Florida driver’s license within 30 days from date of hire.

  • Ability to read meters and charts accurately and maintain records of operations.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the public.
  • Ability to write clearly when filling out shift sheets and documenting data in logbooks.
  • Ability to read and comprehend technical manuals.
  • Must be able to work well and communicate with other employees.
  • Ability to focus on the positive in every situation.
