Overview

Band 8a Senior Advanced Practitioner to join the Children and Young People’s Neurodevelopmental Service, focusing on Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Dual Diagnosis (ASD/ADHD) pathways. The role combines advanced clinical practice, staff leadership, service improvement and system‑wide collaboration.

Key Duties

Advanced autonomous clinical practice within the Neurodevelopmental Service, contributing to diagnostic pathways. Perform complex assessment, formulation, and clinical decision-making within agreed scope and governance. Provide expert advice and leadership across MDT to support high‑quality diagnostic outcomes. Lead day‑to‑day professional and operational leadership, line management/clinical supervision, and support induction, supervision and competency development.

Lead service improvement (pathway redesign, efficiency, reducing unwarranted variation); support national priorities such as timely access and value‑based care. Use data, audit and feedback to drive quality improvement and workforce planning. Contribute to clinical governance, audit, risk and assurance; ensure practice aligns with professional standards, national guidance and local policy. Liaise with education, local authority, CAMHS, primary care and third‑sector partners;

promote effective multi‑agency working in line with ALN responsibilities.

Planning and Design
  • Autonomous decision making, judging complex facts/situations, analysing options relative to patient care/management needs.
  • Managing complexity in planned and unplanned emergencies.
Improvement and Monitoring
  • Lead implementation of clinical governance and effectiveness programmes through risk management, clinical audit and practice development.
  • Identify need for change, lead innovation and manage change, including service development and negotiating influence.
  • Implement policy, guidance and protocols for work areas and interpret relevant policies such as All Wales Advanced Practice Framework.
Communication
  • Use advanced communication skills to establish and maintain therapeutic relationships.
  • Impart diagnosis and sensitive clinical information to patients and relatives in an understandable format, using alternative means where necessary.
  • Manage patients with challenging behaviour applying appropriate management strategies.
Clinical
  • Accountable for the direct delivery and implementation of specialised clinical care programs.
  • Assessment, investigational management and diagnosis with advanced theoretical knowledge and practical experience.
Developing Therapeutic Interventions
  • Prescribe drug treatments following interpretation of clinical findings (independent prescribing).
  • Carry out complex patient clinical reviews and provide feedback to enable care management decisions.
Finance and Budget
  • Ensure travel expenses are signed and returned promptly; sign off roster for ACP team.
  • Ensure safe use of expensive equipment (e.g., bladder scan, ophthalmoscope).
Management, Leadership and Training
  • Clinical line manager for a department; recruit, develop and support staff.
  • Teach, devise training and development programmes; supervise trainees and deliver formal training.
  • Provide mentoring and multi‑professional education at organisational level.
Digital and Information
  • Use IT systems relevant to practice area.
  • Maintain contemporaneous patient documentation accurately, following professional and organisational guidelines.
Person Specification

Qualifications & Knowledge

  • Professional registration (NMC, HCPC).
  • Level 7 Education (Master’s Degree) relevant to area of practice.
  • Evidence of maintaining an Advanced Clinical Practice portfolio.
  • Advanced specialist knowledge of patient pathways.
  • Advanced theoretical knowledge and practical experience to carry out clinical consultation or examination.
  • Management/leadership qualification or equivalent experience.

Experience

  • Extensive post‑registration clinical experience in advanced practice within the speciality area.
  • Evidence of performing at an advanced level of practice.
  • Proven track record of working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams.
