JOB DESCRIPTION
JOB TITLE: Manufacturing Engineer, Corporate Packaging FLSA STATUS: Exempt
REPORTS TO: Technical Manager, Corporate Packaging
SUMMARY
To provide expertise for the corporation in the design and purchase of returnable and expendable packaging for production and purchased goods between customer, supplier, and sister SPI facilities.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
Under general supervision is responsible for the following major tasks:
- Provide guidelines for Estimating to accurately quote packaging costs and quote packaging for major programs prior to submission to the customer
- Gain a complete understanding of customer packaging requirements and work closely with customer packaging engineers in order to satisfy requirements in the most economical manner
- Work with plant Launch Champions/Manufacturing Engineers to develop packaging for new programs and ensure the packaging is optimum and within quote
- Conduct packaging program management requirements, including:
Providing specifications and concepts to suppliers, obtaining quotes, collaborate with suppliers to design packaging samples, work with customer plants and packaging engineers to obtain customer approval, calculate fleet sizes and get formal acceptance from customers, adhere to the budget and negotiate pricing with vendors, generate and obtain approval of purchase orders, and monitor the production and delivery timing of the packaging to the plants. - Troubleshoot packaging problems as they develop throughout the corporation and work for quick and economical resolutions
- Provide direction in support of initiatives for the re-use, recycling, and disposal of packaging materials in Summit facilities
- Assist Purchasing in developing economical in-coming packaging for purchased components that maximizes opportunities for re-use and recycling
- Work on existing packs
- Review for accuracy and present to management the status various Return on Investment analysis reports provided by Corporate Finance
- Complete other projects as directed.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
. College degree in Packaging or Engineering and a minimum of 3 years’ experience (automotive preferred) in the packaging area.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Possesses the ability to gather and analyze information and make decisions from a limited number of choices.
- A minimum score of 50 on the Wonderlic Select Assessment (Traditional score of 26 on the cognitive portion).
TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS
This position typically does require up to 10% travel.
