Job Summary: The Shuttle Driver is responsible for operating terminal tractors to safely move and organize loaded and empty trailers into position in support of daily terminal and customer operations.
Essential Job Functions:
- Organize trailer parking locations for terminal or customer plant yards
- Optimize resource allocation by conducting yard checks, conduct trailer inventory counts, monitoring the status of loaded and empty trailers within the yard at all times
- Assist commercial motor vehicle drivers in locating paperwork and sample turn in locations and direct them to the next available empty trailer if required
- Monitor load dates and times, prioritizing the unloading of loaded trailers before their expiration
- Establish clear communication with dispatch team to ensure a steady supply of milk for the plant and consistent availability of empty trailers for drivers to transport
- Maintain a clean terminal tractor, communicate with the maintenance department on any maintenance needs of the vehicle
- Adhere to safety protocols and guidelines while performing duties, including the use of protective equipment to ensure a safe working environment
- Other related duties as assigned
Qualifications:
Required:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Valid Driver’s license in state of residency with acceptable driving record
- Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug test and submit to the company random drug and alcohol program
- Ability to safely operate and maintain heavy equipment and vehicles and navigate through tight spaces with precision in fast-paced and dynamic environments
- Communicate effectively and professionally with all levels of internal and external staff
- Ability to work outside in inclement weather and in varying environmental conditions
- Basic understanding of safety protocols and practices
- Ability to work any schedule including nights, weekends, and holiday
Preferred:
- Experience in the transportation industry

Skills:
Ability to safely drive on multiple types of road surfaces (paved, gravel, etc.), and navigate in and around pedestrian and commercial motor vehicle traffic within the confines of a plant or terminal parking areas. Operate the vehicle in various weather conditions, day or night for long hours that require precision in confined spaces.
Range of Motion: Must have a full range of motion with hands, arms, and fingers to steer, operate, and adjust controls while operating a terminal tractor.
Sitting, Walking, and Climbing: Must be able to sit for long periods during driving and walk for short periods, including navigating stairs to loading docks and climbing trailer ladders to validate seals. This is mostly a general laborer classification, standing in outdoor work areas and walking between terminals, maintenance shops and Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) operating areas for long periods must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
Specific Vision Abilities: Must be able to hear, see, and speak sufficiently to convey information to coworkers and customers, drive a vehicle, and interpret hand/arm signals.
Inspection and Maintenance: Must be able to bend, stoop, crawl, and squat to perform a full inspection of the assigned vehicle, conduct operator-level maintenance (check engine oil, change tire, etc.), and inspect tires for adequate inflation and potential damage.
Communication: Must be able to read, write, follow and convey directions to properly optimize resource allocation plans.
Work Environment: The duties of this job are performed in and around milk processing plants, customer dairy production area, CMV Terminal environment and outdoors, thereby experiencing some minor to moderate level of noise due to plant machinery, dairy farm equipment and CMV equipment. Must have a working knowledge of and physically utilize personal protective equipment (PPE) to limit or prevent occasional exposure to various severe climate conditions, lighting conditions, fumes, dust, odors, oil, grease, and gasses.
