Job Description

The University of Southern Maine’s Chemistry Department is seeking part-time faculty member to teach its Principles of Chemistry II (CHY 115) summer lecture and Laboratory Techniques II (CHY 116) for the Summer 2026 Session, beginning May 18, 2026.

Principles of Chemistry II (CHY 115) - A continuation of Principle of Chemistry I (CHY 113). This course is designed to provide the foundation for all further studies in chemistry and is a prerequisite for all upper-level chemistry courses.

The Department of Chemistry provides students concentrating in this field with a thorough and practical education that will be useful in teaching or in industrial, technical, or graduate work. Students studying chemistry at USM will gain an understanding of chemistry’s place within the sciences and in today’s industrial and business world.

We are seeking a student-focused instructor who will be responsible for the full delivery and grading of the course. Responsibilities include developing the course, teaching, assessing student performance, and meeting with students as needed. The instructor will be provided with the course learning objectives, program competencies, and suggested topical outline and will be given a previous course syllabus available for reference.

Part-time faculty members are paid on a credit hour basis based on prior teaching experience. Eligible part-time faculty members may elect certain benefits provided by the University of Maine System. In addition, The Center for Academic Innovation provides learning design consulting and faculty development opportunities to help faculty to create engaging programs, courses and lesson plans grounded in evidence-based best practices for every modality.

Required Qualifications:

  • A Ph.D. or M.S. degree in chemistry or related field
  • Teaching experience is preferred but not required.
