Substation Engineer – HDR

HDR is looking for a Substation Engineer to join our growing national team of Power Delivery professionals. As part of our Power sector, you’ll help shape how electricity is generated, transmitted and delivered as global energy demands grow. You’ll work side‑by‑side with experts to contribute to reliable, resilient, and sustainable power systems.

Duties
  • Support preparing scopes, schedules, and budgets, ensuring projects stay on track.
  • Interpret physical substation design—including yard layouts, grounding, lightning protection, control building arrangements, raceways, auxiliary AC/DC systems, and bills of material.
  • Design protection and control systems, including panel arrangements, one‑line/single line diagrams, 3‑line diagrams, AC/DC schematics, equipment wiring, and relay panel wiring.
  • Perform calculations for grounding, lighting protection, AC/DC load studies, and other engineering studies.
  • Prepare equipment specifications for procurement and factory acceptance testing.
  • Coordinate design activities with internal teams (Civil/Structural, Networks, Transmission Line, etc.).
  • Communicate and coordinate project activities with managers, clients, and stakeholders.
  • Work independently and may supervise, mentor, and train less‑experienced EITs and designers.
  • Perform additional duties as required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Local candidate preferred.
  • Experience at an A/E/C consulting firm.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Experience in project execution within the Power Market Sector.
  • Computer skills in Microsoft Office and standard Power Market Sector design software (e.g., PLS‑CAD, AutoCAD, Plant 3D, Auto Pipe, Revit).
  • Strong commitment to employee‑owned culture.

The compensation range for this position depends on skills, experience, education, and location:

{Boston, MA}: $100,716 - $143,880; {Rocky Hill, CT}: $92,323 - $131,890; {Providence, RI}: $88,127 - $125,895
