Senior Traffic Engineer – HDR
Join HDR’s Transportation Business Group as a Senior Traffic Engineer where you will help shape the systems that move people and goods safely, efficiently, and sustainably. HDR is an employee‑owned firm dedicated to innovation, technical excellence, and community‑focused solutions in highways, bridges, transit, freight rail, aviation, and federal transportation ports.
Primary Responsibilities- Lead the design of traffic engineering projects for clients across New England and nationally, ensuring compliance with safety, health, and welfare obligations.
- Engage in traffic modeling, studies, capacity analyses, and prepare signal design and traffic control plans for entities such as MassDOT, MBTA, NHDOT, RIDOT, and the City of Boston.
- Collaborate with civil engineering and planning teams to deliver integrated transportation solutions.
- Maintain a high level of professionalism and stay current with design and safety standards.
- Professional Traffic Operations Engineer (PTOE) certification
- Road Safety Professional (RSP) certification
- Proficiency in Synchro / Sim Traffic and/or PTV Vissim
- Experience working with MassDOT, CTDOT, RIDOT, MBTA, and Massachusetts municipalities
- Proficiency with AutoCAD Civil 3D; recommended experience with Micro Station Open Roads
- Project management or lead traffic engineering experience
- Local candidates given preference
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field
- Minimum of 10 years’ experience in ITS and traffic engineering for urban and rural highways, interchanges, and intersections
- Professional engineering license (PE or equivalent) for the location of the position
- Knowledge of state and federal transportation regulations
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office
- Experience using HCS, CORSIM, Synchro/SIM Traffic and other related software
- Strong oral and written communication and presentation skills; ability to work in a team environment

Compensation ranges are:
Boston, MA $139,524 – $199,320;
Providence, RI $122,084 – $174,405;
Rocky Hill, CT $127,897 – $182,710.
