South Portland, Maine | Full-time Internship | $26/hr | 4 month position:
Starts November-January, ends March-May.
Rudder Industries designs and manufactures high-mix, heavy-duty marine robotics end-to-end in South-Portland, Maine. We are a small, elite team that values aggressive problem solvers who iterate at an extraordinary pace.
The RoleRudder Industries is building a state-of-the-art vessel on a compressed timeline, and we’re looking for a controls intern to support platform control bring-up: firmware, networks, bench testing, and vessel checkout.
You will work with the controls team on controllers, networks, and testing; not a desk-only software internship. Success is hardware that responds correctly, with notes the team can reuse.
What You’ll Do- Support firmware and flashing: Help maintain, flash, and version known-good images under the controls engineer’s procedure.
- Assist bench and vessel test: Run documented test steps, log results, and flag faults before they disappear.
- Help bring up networks and I/O: Support CAN, NMEA 2000, and related marine or industrial networks using schematics and vendor docs.
- Support actuator and vendor checkout: Assist commissioning of controllers, sensors, and actuators with the engineering team.
- Document interfaces and results: Keep test logs, configurations, and interface notes current.
- Work the vessel: Be on the boat and at the bench for install, debug, and supervised test.
- You can repeat a documented flash and bench-test procedure without reinventing it.
- Test logs for the systems you touch are complete enough for someone else to rerun.
- Network and I/O checkout items assigned to you are closed or clearly parked with an owner.
- The team can use your notes during harbor and sea test prep.
- Coursework or project experience in controls, embedded systems, mechatronics, or electrical engineering.
- Some experience flashing boards, using a scope or logic analyzer, or talking to hardware over a bus.
- Comfort reading schematics and vendor documentation.
- Willingness to work in a shipyard / prototype build environment.
- Clear logs and the judgment to stop before forcing a controller that is misbehaving.
- CAN, serial, or similar embedded-network project experience.
- C/C++ or embedded coursework and a project has gone beyond bread boarding.
- Robotics, vehicle, marine, or industrial controls internships or team projects.
- Location: South Portland, Maine. This internship is onsite. Relocation/travel support may be available.
- Engagement: Full-time internship from your start date through May 1. Start date may be anytime between October 1 and January 4.
- Reports to: Head of Mechanical Engineering.
- Work environment: Hands-on work in an active shipyard and prototype build environment.
- Compensation: $26/hr.
- Hands-on work on a real vessel build, not a shadowing internship
- The opportunity to join a dedicated, collaborative team building innovative marine systems
- A small team where your work shows up on the boat
