Job Description
The Aquatics Specialist will provide administrative and program support to the Aquatics Department under the direction of the Aquatics Director, aligning with the YMCA of Southern Maine - Casco Bay's priorities, protocols, and values. This includes customer service, administrative duties, lifeguarding, swim instruction, and more.
Location14 Old South Freeport Road, Freeport, Maine 04032, United States.
Qualifications- 1-3 years of prior aquatics experience. Experience working with youth preferred.
- Strong swimming skills.
- Current certifications, or the capability to obtain and maintain certifications with YMCA support:
Lifeguard (YMCA On the Guard II and/or American Red Cross), Swim Lesson Instructor (YMCA V6, YMCA Swim Instructor, or Water Safety Instructor preferred). - Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) and Oxygen (O₂) certification.
- Strong relationship‑building skills and ability to welcome and include people from all dimensions of diversity.
- Proven initiative, self‑motivation, excellent decision‑making, problem solving, communication, and organizational skills.
- Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office and databases.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate with non‑English speakers. Knowledge of other languages preferred.
- A clean record, as determined through a criminal background check and fingerprinting via the Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS).
- Ability to complete all physical requirements of the job with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Scheduling Support – Assist with aquatics staff, swim lesson, and pool schedules.
- Swim Lesson Administration – Assist with swim lesson registration, rosters, payments, and general coordination of classes. Provide excellent member service.

- Programming – Follow and support all Association protocols, priorities, State guidelines, and Y Brand guidelines. Regularly support programming by guarding, teaching swim lessons and water exercise classes, performing on‑scan duties (e.g., water chemistry tests) and taking corrective action based on results.
- Operations & Safety – While guarding, maintain rescue readiness, focus, and aggressive scanning of the entire area of responsibility. Stay vigilant to all patrons and activity on and below the water’s surface, on the pool bottom, and on the pool deck. Enforce non‑swimmer protection and safety rules. Take immediate corrective action when swimmers break rules or engage in risky behavior.
- Teaching – When teaching, provide safe, effective, and creative instruction for individuals at all levels. Provide timely guidance and support to all members through proper instruction in a group setting.
- Leadership – Be a collaborative, engaged, and active participant in our Association, communicating effectively and making sound decisions.
- Relationship Building – Develop positive, authentic relationships within the Y that enhance awareness of the Y’s mission and impact, growth in the number of people served, and revenue.
- Mission Advancement – Advocate for the Y by promoting its cause. Support philanthropy by raising awareness of the annual campaign within the Y community.
- Data Collection & Tracking – Maintain accurate and consistent data tracking and documentation, as required.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
