Safe Indoor Air Oregon Schools – Event- Outreach

Safe Indoor Air for Oregon Schools (SIAFOS) is looking for On-call Table Leads and Air Quality Science Activity Leads to support our outreach at OMSI’s Community Science Nights and other public events throughout the year.

SIAFOS is a nonprofit science communication and citizen science organization focused on classroom air quality. We currently concentrate our efforts on Portland Public Schools (PPS), where poor ventilation rates allow viruses to spread easily, students and staff are often exposed to air pollutants such as fine particulate matter, woodsmoke, allergens, and mold, and the effects of climate change are putting kids and teachers at increasing risk of heat waves and wildfire smoke hazards.

We’re looking for Table and Activity Leads who:

• Enjoy engaging with families, kids, and community members
• Are curious about environmental health, public policy, or science education
• Want flexible, part-time work that fits with their school schedule or other commitments
• Are reliable, friendly, and comfortable setting up and staffing a community-facing table

Access to a reliable vehicle and valid insurance is a plus (some events require transporting materials).

• Help set up and staff the SIAFOS table at OMSI and other events
• Share in the responsibility of safe-keeping and transportation of tabling materials
• Lead or assist with simple, interactive air quality science activities
• Share information about indoor air quality and our work with the public
• Work closely with our community organizer to ensure that information from these events are cataloged appropriately

Schedule:

Flexible – events are usually in the evenings or on weekends

Location:

OMSI and other event venues around Portland

This is a great opportunity for students looking for meaningful but flexible, paid gigs, especially those interested in education, public health, environmental science, advocacy, or community organizing.
