Overview
Provide direct support to dentists, hygienists, denturists and other provider personnel in the delivery of dental care and service within a Kaiser Permanente dental office.
Responsibilities- Performs all of the duties permitted a dental assistant consistent with the individual a7s training and in the presence of or under the observation of a licensed provider as referenced in State Dental Practice Act and the related Administrative Rules. These duties include: applying topical anesthetic and desensitizing agents as directed by the provider; removal of sutures and post-extraction and periodontal dressings;
retracting a patient 1s cheek, tongue, or other tissue during an operation; assisting in the placement or removal of a rubber dam; removing debris during operative procedures; performing extra-oral procedures that are not hazardous; inspecting the oral cavity using a mirror; drying root canals with paper points; placing temporary filling material into endodontic access; taking impressions for a periodontal night guard;
polishing coronal surfaces; training patients in oral hygiene techniques; placing dental radiographs, adjusting equipment, and exposing films. - In support of the practice of a dentist provider who is not an orthodontist; preliminary select and size bands; remove fixed orthodontic appliances; check for loose bands and brackets; remove ligature ties and head appliances; place and remove arch wires, elastics and orthodontic separators; take intra-oral measurements for orthodontic procedures; remove supra-gingival orthodontic bracket bonding material; place ligature ties and head appliances;
train patients in oral hygiene; place and expose dental radiographs; organize patient dental records according to guidelines; greet and inform patients of general treatment; review health questionnaires and notify providers of conditions that could affect treatment; promote patient comfort and answer questions as directed by the provider. - Anticipate provider needs in the delivery of patient care; maintain proper scheduling and patient flow; prepare, organize, pass dental instruments and supplies as requested; establish and maintain a clear operating field; record and verify information in the patient 1s dental record; enter, retrieve and transmit patient care information via the scheduling system (TEAM) as trained; respond to medical emergencies per guidelines;
expose and process radiographs; take vital signs; ensure infection control and proper handling of materials; maintain a clean, organized work environment and ensure equipment function via preventive maintenance. - Perform other duties as assigned; act in accordance with program policies, guidelines, and laws governing the role; support direct patient care activities with consent to dentist presence; use additional functions such as placing matrix retainers, polishing restorations, and assisting with nitrous oxide monitoring as allowed; other duties appropriate for EFDA as authorized by Board rules.
- Minimum one (1) year of experience as a dental assistant OR a graduate from an ADA-accredited dental assisting program.
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Dental Radiation Proficiency Certificate (Oregon)
- Pit and Fissure Sealant Certificate (Oregon) within 6 months of hire
- Expanded Function Dental Assistant Certificate (Oregon) within 3 months of hire
- Basic Life Support within 3 months of hire
- The individual applicant must demonstrate, to the satisfaction of the interviewer, the following qualifications. These qualifications must be maintained as a condition of continued employment.
- Demonstrated competence in four-handed dentistry technique.
- Satisfactory knowledge and proficiency in using current dental materials, instruments and equipment.
- Ability to follow instructions and work under direct or indirect supervision.
- Well organized in time and effort.
- Professionally courteous demeanor when interacting with patients, providers and other employees; good interpersonal skills.
- Excellent attendance record.
- Final candidate must pass a clinical pre-employment skills test.
- Basic knowledge of sterilization and infection control equipment.
- Days/Times vary. Position is part of replacement pool. Travel to various locations including Gresham, Glisan, Clackamas, Johnson Creek, Portland City, Eastmoreland, Grand, N Interstate.
