Overview
This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval – award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application.
Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.
To qualify for this position you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.
- United States Citizenship – non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
- Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine.
- The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
- Current – full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States – or in the District of Columbia.
- Residency Training – Physicians must have completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
- Residents currently enrolled in ACGME or AOA accredited residency training programs who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as “Physician Resident Providers” (PRPs).
- PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee‑basis.
- PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; they are to have a scope of practice that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision.
- Proficiency in spoken and written English.
- Preferred Experience – General Urology experience preferred with an opportunity to focus on female Urology, reconstruction, and/or andrology.
- Physical Requirements – Light lifting and carrying under 15 pounds; reaching above shoulder; use of fingers; both hands required; walking 5–10 hours; standing 5–10 hours; near vision correctable 13–16"; far vision correctable 20/50–20/100; depth perception; color discrimination; hearing (aid may be permitted); mental & emotional stability required.

- Participate in and/or manage aspects of a urology surgery program, including clinical, administrative, academic, education of residents and medical students, and research components.
- Deliver care to veterans requiring urologic care or having surgery‑related illnesses.
- Work with multiple divisions/services throughout the facility to improve outcomes and efficiencies.
- Collaborate frequently with nursing and other disciplines to facilitate the operations of ICUs, wards, and ECUs.
- Responsible for the structure and details of physician rounding schedules, including nighttime, weekend, and holiday coverage systems relevant to the care of surgical patients.
- Perform administrative components of patient care management – dictation of progress notes, operating‑room reports, discharge summaries, signatures, and consultation referrals for in‑patients and outpatients.
- Participate in ward/ICU rounds, morbidity and mortality conferences, grand rounds, Joint Commission activities, and other relevant activities.
- Participate in quality improvement activities.
- Provide clinical coverage as needed by the urology surgery team.
- Meet continuing education requirements.
- Establish and promote an atmosphere of unity through collaborative practice and effective communication among all staff disciplines.
- Foster a high level of patient and staff satisfaction.
- Provide surgical treatment for patients with urological dysfunction or diseases.
- Supervise and train physician assistants, residents, and medical student trainees.
- Participate in research activities to promote emerging treatments for veterans and advance science.
- Work Schedule – Monday through Friday, with tours and shift times varying between 7:00 am and 6:00 pm; compressed tour available with supervisor approval.
