About The CompanyWe are a renewable energy and ocean technology company committed to rapidly developing and deploying technologies that will ensure a sustainable future for Earth by unlocking the vast energy potential of its oceans. Our focus is on capturing civilizational levels of ultra‑low‑cost renewable energy for applications including computing and affordable renewable fuels delivered to shore. The company is a public benefit corporation headquartered in Portland, Oregon, and backed by leading venture capitalists, philanthropic investors, university endowments, and private investment offices.
We operate as an idea meritocracy in which the best ideas change the company’s direction on a regular basis.
You’ll be part of the engineering team responsible for designing, integrating, and building electromechanical systems that sit at the heart of our technology. Your work spans CAD design, assembly, testing, and documentation—bridging the gap between mechanical and electrical engineering. Success in this role means creating robust, manufacturable designs and contributing to systems that perform reliably in demanding environments. You’ll collaborate closely with other engineers and designers across disciplines, providing input on manufacturability, testing, and process improvements.
You’ll also get hands‑on—assembling, wiring, and machining parts to bring ideas into functional prototypes and final hardware. Within your first year, you’ll be a trusted contributor to critical builds and a go‑to resource for practical design and integration expertise.
- Work with cross‑disciplinary engineering groups to determine system requirements.
- Use CAD software to design mechanical hardware for prototypes and production systems.
- Integrate mechanical and electronics hardware into functional assemblies.
- Provide DFM and DFA feedback to other engineers and designers.
- Read and interpret mechanical and wiring diagrams to support builds.
- Assemble, test, and troubleshoot electromechanical systems.
- Write clear documentation to capture design details and process steps for production builds.
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering preferred (Electrical Engineering considered); equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted in lieu of a degree.
- Proficiency with CAD tools and mechanical design fundamentals.
- Experience assembling electromechanical systems.
- Ability to read and interpret mechanical and wiring diagrams.
- Skilled in the use of hand tools for basic part fabrication and assembly.
- Hands‑on experience with tools and techniques used in the electronics industry: soldering irons, crimpers, multimeters, and related tools.
- Experience working in high‑consequence or high‑reliability industries.
- Skilled in the use of manual machine tools and measuring tools.
- Familiarity with PLM or configuration management systems.
- Comfort providing feedback across disciplines and working in fast‑moving startup environments.
- You will be required to be on your feet for up to 8 hours per day and occasionally lift objects weighing 50 pounds or more. You should be comfortable occasionally working in elevated work areas, including ladders and platforms, while using appropriate safety equipment.
- You must also be able to work safely in confined spaces when required. All necessary safety protocols and equipment will be provided.
- You will occasionally be asked to help other teams within the company, such as facilities, office management, and logistics.
The ability to support occasional deployment or field assignments is preferred. While this is not a deal breaker, candidates should be open to periodic travel or on‑site work as needed for operational support.
Compensation And Benefits- Cash compensation of $100,000 - $175,000
- Equity in the company. We’re all owners and if we’re successful, this equity should be far and away the most valuable component of your compensation.
