POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Director of Finance/CFO provides strategic leadership for all financial operations of the University, ensuring fiscal integrity, sustainability, and alignment with institutional goals. This position oversees financial planning, budgeting, accounting, risk management, and compliance, serving as a key advisor to the President and Board of Directors.

This position oversees the business and clinic billing offices.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Financial and Strategic Planning Duties
  • Develop and maintain effective financial management systems, policies, and procedures that support the University’s strategic goals.
  • Lead financial and debt strategic planning, forecasting, and reporting to ensure long-term fiscal health.
  • Provide timely, accurate financial information for audits, tax filings, and compliance with all regulatory requirements.
  • Manage budget signoffs and salary allocations in collaboration with HR, ensuring alignment with staffing and financial policies.
  • Develop and implement 3–5-year financial and departmental strategic plans in alignment with the University’s overall strategy.
Budget Preparation Duties
  • Direct the annual budgeting process, integrating institutional priorities, strategic initiatives, and long-term financial projections.
  • Continuously monitor economic, policy, and enrollment trends to inform budget assumptions and projections.
Accounting, Compliance and Debt Management Duties
  • Oversee preparation and presentation of monthly financial statements and cash flow reports for the President and Board Finance Committee.
  • Maintain compliance with accounting standards, audit requirements, and tax obligations.
  • Manage institutional investments, banking relationships, and cash reserves to optimize liquidity and returns within statutory limits.
  • Serve as the primary liaison with external auditors to ensure sound compliance and governance practices.
  • Oversee government financial relationships and reporting (e.g., DOE, DHHS) including work-study and other drawdowns.
Fund Raising and Public and Intergovernmental Relations Duties
  • Support the University’s Office of Advancement and general fundraising and development efforts in terms of gift accounting, compliance with 501(c) (3) regulations and guidelines with regard to donations of cash, in-kind gifts, stock transfers, bequests and related contributions to the University.
  • Monitor, analyze and continuously refine asset and inventory management strategies and systems.
Committee Duties
  • Member of the NUNM Board Finance and Administrative Affairs Committee [FAAC].
  • Participate as a member of various institutional committees.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

BA in Accounting required, MBA and/or CPA preferred; 5 years’ experience in financial management, accounting, budgetary management; higher education experience preferred; (3 years of supervisory experience) or equivalent combination of education and/or experience.

  • Extensive background in financial management, including the areas of budgeting, financial forecasting/planning, financial analysis, as well as depth of experience in investments, cash management, and debt management. Possess a strategic orientation and a “big picture” perspective.
  • Prior successful supervisory experience including hiring, developing, and motivating others.
  • Ability to define financial issues and develop and articulate solutions to colleagues, the President, and to the Board of Directors.
  • Demonstrated success in providing managers with the necessary data for effective and timely decision making, performing financial analyses for projects relating to new program initiatives, location site viability, and investment strategies.
  • Ability to effectively interact with professional colleagues, both inside and outside the University.
  • Effective organizational skills required including demonstrated ability to accomplish both broad, visionary assignments as well as complex, detailed projects on a timely basis.
  • Strong conceptual, creative, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to efficiently organize and manage large amounts of data, information, records; attention to detail; and well organized.
