Job Overview

Position: Registered Nurse (Secure Residential)

Location: Barbara Roberts House, NE Portland, OR (may float to two other secure facilities)

Schedule: Monday–Thursday, 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. (site & shift differential: $5.00 per hour)

Program & Position Description

Secure Residential Treatment Programs serve adults with severe and persistent mental illness (SPMI) who have histories of institutionalization. The RN coordinates treatment for the shift, implements medical interventions, and supports a trauma‑informed care environment.

Essential Responsibilities
  • Provide quality nursing care, including all medical interventions and documentation.
  • Formulate nursing care plans for all medical/physical conditions.
  • Administer PRN medications based on assessment.
  • Plan, implement, evaluate, and document direct resident care activities.
  • Act as liaison with medical staff, pharmacy, and laboratory services.
  • Emphasize community reintegration through rehabilitation, therapy, dual‑diagnosis treatment, nutrition, exercise, vocational training, and staff‑escorted outings.
  • Administer psychotropic medications and interpret response.
  • Collaborate on medical treatment plans and resident care.
  • Interact with residents, visitors, and community members to support treatment and advise on rights.
  • Maintain electronic health record (EHR) and ancillary records.
  • Participate in nursing meetings and case conferences.
  • Assist in crisis situations following emergency protocols.
  • Ensure safety of residents, staff, and property; follow fire regulations.
  • Adhere to abuse reporting laws, HIPAA, and client rights.
  • Contact licensed medical practitioner regarding laboratory results.
  • Lead resident nursing groups.
  • Coordinate hand‑offs with incoming shift.
  • Administer seclusion and restraint as defined by policy.
  • Opportunistically work additional hours when needed.
  • Complete annual training and pursue professional development.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Education:

  • Active, unencumbered Oregon Registered Nurse License and CPR/First Aid Certification.
  • Competencies for QMHA or QMHP per OAR .
  • QMHP:
    Bachelor’s degree in Nursing.
  • QMHA:
    Associate’s Degree in Nursing plus at least one year mental‑health experience.

Experience: Minimum two years of clinical inpatient or outpatient experience (preferred).

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of medical conditions common in SPMI and nursing care fundamentals.
  • Motivational Interviewing skills.
  • Ability to maintain a trauma‑informed environment.
  • Computer proficiency (hardware & software).
  • Data entry and retrieval competence.

Other:

  • Ability to commute between sites.
  • Proficiency in CPR, First Aid, and AED use.
Working Conditions

Clinical/outpatient or residential setting with meal breaks subject to interruption. Moderate to high risk of injury, exposure to disease, biohazards, noise, and violence. Requires flexible time management and ability to adapt to unpredictable circumstances.

Physical Demands

Typical day includes sitting, computer use, occasional community transportation, and assistance with resident safety in volatile situations.

Starting Rate Range: $50.75 – $54.37 USD
