Medical Laboratory Scientist – Providence Portland Medical Center, Portland, OR
Full-Time / Variable Shift
Responsible for the accurate and timely reporting of high complexity laboratory test results with minimal supervision. Capable of performing pre-analytical, analytical and post-analytical duties including specimen evaluation, data analysis, and instrument maintenance and problem resolution. They often work with acute-care and outpatient caregivers, along with other Laboratory Services staff in performing their duties. Accurately follows the procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, recording and reporting patient test results.
Conducts established quality control (QC) procedures on analytical equipment, reagents, media and products with appropriate documentation. Correlates clinical, clerical and technical data. Reviews and evaluates test results for accuracy. Recognizes testing problems including unexpected results or abnormal relationships of analytes and alerts senior personnel regarding discrepancy. Recognizes and resolves instrument errors or sample problems; initiating and documenting corrective action. Engages in the evaluation of quality improvement opportunities.
Takes appropriate action on specimens with critical values and/or abnormal results. Assists in the mentoring and training of new caregivers in the department. Monitors the laboratory’s quality control functions by reviewing the quality control data and evaluating possible trends. Ability to convey principles/methods of testing to other caregivers and care providers. Assists in evaluating and documentation of technical personnel competency.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Chemical, Physical, Biological, or Clinical Laboratory Sciences, Medical Technology, Medical Laboratory Science, or foreign equivalent.
- 1 year of experience as a Medical Laboratory Scientist in a laboratory department.
- Requires skills and experience in the following:
- Accurate and timely reporting of patient results in pre-analytical, analytical and post-analytical phases of specimen analysis.
- Quality Assessment processes, incorporates continuous quality improvement into practice.
- Demonstrates the ability to perform Quality Control analysis, instrument troubleshooting and calibration.
- Phlebotomy and processing of specimens.
- Laboratory analyzers/instrumentation.
- Personal computer and associated peripheral computer equipment.

Pay Range – $49,629 – $115,170 per year ($23.86 – $55.37 per hour). Additional compensation may be available for shift differentials, standby/on-call, overtime, premiums, extra shift incentives, or bonus opportunities.
