Citizenship and Access Requirements: Must satisfy all VA onboarding, identity-verification, training, occupational-health, and facility or system access requirements applicable to the assignment.

Security Requirements: No classified clearance is specified. Employment requires a favorable VA background, suitability, credentialing, and system-access determination.

Number of FTEs: 1.0 FTE, totaling approximately 2,080 regular hours during the base period, plus scheduled overtime, on-call, and callback coverage.

Type of Employment: Full-Time with on-call and callback responsibilities.

Estimated Total Compensation: $42.11 per hour.

Working Hours: On-site 8-, 9-, or 10-hour shifts established by the supervisor. Rotating weekends and holidays, overtime, on-call, and callback coverage may be required.

Work Arrangement: On-site at assigned VA Portland Health Care System facilities in Portland, Vancouver, or Salem. Remote or telework performance is not authorized.

Period of Performance: January 4, 2027 through January 3, 2032, if all four option periods are exercised, with a possible extension of up to six months.

Summary of Services

The Medical Instrument Technician will provide full-time on-site diagnostic ultrasound and sonography services across the VA Portland Health Care System. The position independently performs routine and complex ultrasound, vascular and Doppler studies, portable and intraoperative examinations, biopsy and interventional support, image-quality review, PACS documentation, patient preparation, and equipment and supply readiness, including assigned on-call and callback coverage.

Mandatory Qualifications

Must be registered by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers in Abdomen and Small Parts and hold at least two additional certifications, such as RVT, OB/GYN, or Musculoskeletal Sonography, or an accepted equivalent.

Must have at least three years of current diagnostic ultrasound experience.

Must have worked in a hospital setting within the previous six months, including coverage of inpatient units, the emergency department, and the intensive care unit.

Must maintain current Basic Cardiac Life Support certification and possess or obtain a National Provider Identifier.

Must demonstrate expertise in scrotal and pelvic ultrasound, ultrasound-guided liver and renal biopsy, native and transplanted organ imaging, renal artery stenosis, and renal Doppler studies.

Must hold a full and unrestricted state license when required by the jurisdiction in which services are performed.

Must be available for the full period of performance and able to support rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, overtime, on-call, and callback coverage as assigned.

Must satisfy VA occupational-health, immunization, background, suitability, training, and system-access requirements.

Duties and Responsibilities

Interpret imaging requests and independently perform routine and complex diagnostic ultrasound and vascular examinations.

Perform abdominal, neck, chest, extremity, pelvic, retroperitoneal, scrotal, and other assigned ultrasound studies.

Perform vascular and Doppler studies, including upper- and lower-extremity venous studies and renal Doppler examinations.

Perform portable, emergency, intensive-care, and intraoperative ultrasound examinations as required.

Assist with tumor ablation, biopsies, aspirations, catheter placements, and other image-guided procedures using sterile technique.

Prepare and position patients, explain examinations, and monitor patient comfort and condition.

Recognize significant abnormalities and promptly notify the radiologist or referring clinician when immediate attention is required.

Evaluate images for positioning, labeling, technique, completeness, and diagnostic quality before transmitting them to PACS.

Document examinations, procedures, escalated findings, and required workload information in authorized VA systems.

Maintain ultrasound equipment, supplies, examination rooms, and infection-prevention processes.

Support staff training, quality assurance, protocol improvement, and adoption of new procedures.

Provide assigned on-call and callback coverage and respond to urgent and emergency imaging needs.
