As an Inland Marine Underwriting Consultant at CNA Insurance
, you will be responsible for underwriting individual risks and managing a portfolio by leveraging strong technical underwriting acumen and developing key partner relationships.
- Product Knowledge:
Underwriter must possess fundamental knowledge of inland marine coverages with extensive experience in key lines such as Builders Risk, Contractors Equipment, Installation, Property, and Transportation/Logistics. - Risk Assessment:
Reviews applications and supporting documentation for a wide range of individual risks, determines acceptability of risk in accordance with company guidelines, and sets appropriate pricing based on risk exposure, loss experience, financial statements, underwriting philosophy, and competitive analysis in line with compliance requirements. - Product Delivery & Communication:
Efficiently manages communication required to review submissions, gather information, prepare quotes, and delivers products to key partners. Early engagement with agents is required for adverse underwriting decisions, rate appeals, or declinations. - Portfolio Management &
Collaboration:
Drives top & bottom‑line results by line of business and business unit goals & metrics, and collaborates with other internal business units to achieve organizational results. - Market Facing:
Markets products through in‑person and virtual visits; sells and negotiates on behalf of CNA to secure results while building mutually beneficial partnerships for the company, distribution partners, and customers. - Systems & Programs:
Utilizes relevant CNA systems to perform day‑to‑day activities along with Microsoft Suite and similar software.
- Advanced knowledge of underwriting and insurance industry theories and practices.
- High-level technical expertise and product‑specific knowledge of Inland Marine coverage.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and negotiation skills, with the ability to interact effectively with all levels of CNA’s internal and external business partners.
- Ability to work independently and exercise judgment to make critical business decisions.
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills.
- Demonstrated collaboration and leadership skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and similar business‑related software.
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent. Professional designations preferred.
- Minimum seven to ten years of Inland Marine underwriting experience.
This is a hybrid position; the successful candidate will work from Seattle or any of CNA’s West Coast offices.
Pay Range: $72,000 to $141,000 annually (national base pay range for this job level).
