PositionSummary
Responsible for specific project segments and activities associated with the profitable repair of ships. Under the guidance of the assigned Project Manager, plans, coordinates, manages, and evaluates work required to repair or modify marine vessels. The incumbent must be self‑disciplined, resourceful, and willing to accept responsibility for yard and customer assets as related to the assigned project. Exercises appropriate independent judgement in adjusting priorities, goals and work assignments, methods, procedures and techniques to successfully facilitate vessel repairs and shipyard maintenance.
Overall goals, budgets and priorities are established jointly with the appropriate manager where applicable. Progress and performance are monitored through periodic evaluation.
- Develop short‑term and long‑term goals including work priorities and schedules for consideration to the assigned Project Manager; plan, coordinate and direct daily and weekly production activities on assigned ship repair contracts and construction crafts.
- Coordinate tasks for each job among customers, contract administrators, and craft workers and revise daily/weekly schedules as needed; inspect work in progress to ensure workmanship conforms to specifications and repair schedules.
- Communicate project status to the customer and Project Manager; participate in planning and production meetings.
- Consult with supervisory and project management personnel to establish and revise work schedules, clarify objectives, follow progress and resolve production issues; ensure employees are correctly carrying out work procedures, interpreting specifications, and coordinating phases of the repair process to prevent delays; coordinate and order parts and supplies as directed.
- Write accurate and timely records or documentation for each job and contribute to final written specifications; resolve repair problems and improve repair methods of standard vessel maintenance work.
- Prepare reports on work progress, materials used, costs, and adjust work schedules as indicated; operate within the established budget and monitor project costs while maintaining required quality standards.
- Review employee training needs and cross‑craft trades workers to maximize the skill base; recommend solutions for training needs and opportunities to maximize use of craft trades.
- Develop and enforce work standards, production schedules, quality and quantity requirements, and work rules consistent with operating policies.
- Maintain effective working relationships with craft workers, customers, and contract administrators.
- Ensure that worker safety and environmental concerns are constantly monitored and problems resolved; ensure all work meets regulatory standards.
An Associate’s degree in a technical skill associated with ship repair and four to six (4 to
6) years of progressively complex work experience demonstrating the required ship repair and production management skills; an equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.
Knowledge of marine-related equipment, ship repair and construction techniques, sequencing of ship repair activities, shipyard safety practices, and complex mathematical principles applied to shipping activities.
